Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve sits in a large volcanic crater. It is one of Victoria's most fascinating and significant geological formations. It's a short detour from the Great Ocean Road and offers ample walking opportunities for people of all abilities – from easy boardwalks to scenic climbs. Tower Hill is home to some of Australia's best loved wildlife. Emus, kangaroos, koalas, swans, ducks and blue wrens all live inside this magnificent dormant volcano. Walk across wetlands, craters and bushland and learn how the park was exploited by early settlers before being restored by volunteers. Join a tour run by experienced local guides to discover how Tower Hill was transformed from a desolate wasteland to the park you see today. See more..

My wife and I visited this place on a Wednesday off peak season during our recent 3 days holiday in Daylesford. There were very few people around during our walk around the scenic 1.7 km circuit track. A new Visitor Centre and new toilets are currently being built near the car park area. Mt Franklin was created by a volcanic eruption about 470,000 years ago. The ground is bordered by conifer forest, and the crater has been covered with ornamental trees such as Silver Birch, White Poplar, Sycamore and Californian Redwoods. See more..

    - CRATER VIEW

The walk up Mt Noorat, I think is best done early in the morning, with the fog just lifting and the sun just rising. The walk itself isn't hard but does rise significantly from the plains below. There is still some vegetation on the mount, which is good to see as the smooth round hillocks that make up the rise and crater lip are otherwise bald. The crisp fresh air and the plains below are magnificent in the early morning light. The magpies give you a good early morning rendition of get up and get going too. The view to the horizon is similarly doted with other ancient volcanic cones from our recent past. The scenery is fantastic and the walk wont do you any harm. Go on, get up and get up there.
