    Cape Nelson State Park image
This is a 243-hectare park and it's not too far from Portland if you are staying in the area... it's well worth exploring. There are stunning vistas from wherever you are in the park. You can look for wildlife as they have the heath mouse, red-necked wallaby and echidnas in the area. The lighthouse is in this park ...but even if you don't visit the lighthouse there are some amazing walks to be had in the area. It's truly utterly stunning. There is a 3 kilometre cliff walk if you want to just enjoy the beautiful views. See more..

Coolart Wetlands and Homestead Reserve image
Our monthly bus trip was certainly a surprise,on reflection a total surprise. The drive onto the property gave us no indication of what was in store. Immaculately kept garden and peeping through the trees the absolutely magnificent Homestead. The picnic/barbecue facilities were ideal for large or small groupsToilets were spotless and the Parks Victoria staff were very helpful. There were also walks through the property of which was not really suitable for 80/90 year olds.A walk back in time to the luxuries of a bygone era. 5. 4.5 Marysville State Forest (14 reviews)
    - Peaceful and Manageable
Spent 1-2 hours State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Marysville State Forest image
I did two walks in this beautiful region. #1 Dropped at the Keppel lookout and walked to Steavenson Falls and then onto Marysville. Very manageable, although I missed the signpost to where my lift was waiting, and ended up walking the 4km to Marysville - which was a beautiful fern-lined walk next to the river. #2 Walk to Anderson Mill and return via Wilks Creek; steep at the beginning, but again enjoyable to the Mill and return track was manageable. Directions at the end of Wilks Creek could have been a little bit clearer at the end of the trail to return to the car park area. Divine and will do this walk again and may even consider camping at the Mill! See more..
  6. 4.5 Lerderderg State Park (13 reviews)
    - Same great walks
State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Lerderderg State Park image
The Lerderderg River has carved a deep and picturesque gorge through this rugged park. Picnic at Shaws Lake or O'Briens Crossing, follow an old water race and hike part of the Great Dividing Trail, or simply stroll along the river from Mackenzies Flat Picnic Area. Although this park is just an hour's drive from Melbourne, it feels truly remote in many areas. See the Lerderderg River Gorge which dominates and divides it in two from O'Briens Crossing in the north to Mackenzies Flat in the south. Experienced hikers will be rewarded with dramatic views. Bring the family and enjoy a barbecue by the river then take a gentle stroll upstream to Grahams Dam. Set up camp at Lerderderg Campground, which is a popular spot set in woodland. See more..

  9. 4.0 Mount Granya State Park (5 reviews)
    - A wonderful surprise
    State Parks
    Mount Granya State Park image
We parked at Cottontree Creek picnic and camping site. A short walk beside the creek leads to a very well preserved Scouts Hut built in 1937. A further short walk led to to the Granya Falls. Being late winter, there was quite a lot of water flowing and the surrounding gorge was terraced by beautiful moss-covered boulders. A steep but quite manageable walk past the falls leads to a firetrail. There is a clearly marked turnoff indicating 1.8km to the peak of Mt Granya. The distance from car park to peak is 5.2km and there is 600metres of elevation climb. From the peak we could see the snowy mountains in the distance. Along the way, there were native orchids and other wildflowers, many birds, some kangaroos. We didn't see another person all day and the track was easy to follow. There was no litter anywhere nor any weeds. Whilst some parts of the walk are steep, it is straight forward and if you take your time, quite manageable for most hikers. See more..

There are numerous tracks crisscrossing through this forest but the highlight for us was the Stony Creek Trestle bridge which was once a railroad from Bairnsdale to Orbost, an amazing structure built by hand and horse. See more..

    - An excellent Sunday drive

    Marysville State Forest image
Heading north from Warburton, the road towards Marysville seems to climb foreever on a gentle grade, winding through a variety of landscapes, made even more interesting when you see the re-growth since the Black Saturday fires in 2009. But the highlight is clearly the thousands of tree ferns that line most of the road. See more..

    Barrabool State Forest image
Another spot in the wimmera that most people don't know exists. 16 mins south of murtoa and approx 25 mins from Horsham. I like to head there in winter because that's the best time to spot the numerous species of honeyeaters that call this place home. Be aware that the roads into forest don't cope to well with rain. - Cool, temperate rain forests
Spent More than 3 hours State Parks
    Toolangi State Forest image
This state forest extends from Mount Monda in the south up to Murrindindi in the north and includes the township of Toolangi. You will see Mountain Ash trees towering above you ... ferns surrounding you... flowers vibrant colours seeking your attention ... wherever you access this from... the area is beautiful. I accessed it recently from Toolangi... it is quite mesmerisingly beautiful. The quietude is enthralling... and if you do pass others, they are usually in awe of everything around them.. . so they are kindred souls. See more..
