5.0Karr's Reef Goldmine(36 reviews) - Best gold mining tour we have ever done Spent 2-3 hours Mines
Took a mid week tour which ended up being just us and the tour guide Greg. This is one of the best tours I have ever been to. Greg was extremely knowledgable, passionate and engaging about the history of the area and gold mine. The mine itself was spectacular and Greg’s commentary meant you learnt everything about the mine from start to finish. Do not miss this tour if you are visiting yackadandah. For $25 per person, it’s the best value gold mining tour you will ever find. See more..
4.5Balaclava Mine(11 reviews) - probably few have heard of this place Mines
Whroo is one of those off the beaten track locations that must not be missed if you are in the area.It is an old gold mining town near Nagambie that has the old church still standing which now is a rangers office. In its heyday several hundred people lived and worked there and the history is told at the ranger station. The remains of the Balaclava open cut gold mine is evident and in its heyday it really was a goldmine .If coming from Nagambie you cross the historic wooden bridge which is a great photo opportunityit itself ,bu tfrom there it is a dirt road which can be slippery if raining. You can get there from Rochester as well.Dont rely on your gps.Several walks are available but beware of snakes in the summer. Picnic facilities available.See more..
3.5North British Mine(10 reviews) - Historical But Not Well Presented Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Mines
This is a historically significant mine site but is poorly presented. It was privately owned by Robert Oswald and some others and follwed his search for gold at Parkins Reef in 1858. He called it the North British Mine because of his Scottish roots. By 1887 it was described as one of the richest mines world-wide.Oswald managed the site for thirty years and apparently died there in an accident. By 1927 it was closed and later bull-dozed for safety reasons. What is left is not well presented but there are some intersting tunnels and brick work and worth a visit. it is 2 KM south east of Maldon on the road to Newstead.See more..

4.0Forest Creek Historic Gold Diggins(9 reviews) - Lots to see at this old Gold Mining Site Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Mines
This was the White and Red Hills sites that were mined for 150 years. Here there was a self-guided 400m circuit tour with rusty, old machinery, an ancient river bed, mine shafts, the engine shed, and hydraulic sluicing site. It was quite a scenic walk redolent of Adelong in NSW but not as dramatic scenery.See more..

Given the significance of the impact of the gold rush on Victoria, we expected a major monument to mark the site where gold was first found in Victoria. When we arrived, it was somewhat of a disappointment.See more..
4.0Hume And Hovell Monument(1 review) - Just like a treasure hunt Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues • Mines
Well ... well... this was an adventure... I followed a sign that indicated there was a monument... then it led me to another sign... I finally arrived at a dead end street... of course, alarm bells were going off...but then my curiosity was piqued. I parked in the dead end street and started to walk... I stood lost as I was reading the signs on the gates... then thought I would just keep going... I walked through a gateway... then started following the path. Of course, I was thinking this was a ploy for a serial killer... but that just proved more interesting. As I walked, it was very pretty and you could hear the birds singing to each other. I finally got to the monument. It existed!! I was beginning to wonder. I have NO idea why it's in such a remote location... maybe it's an indication of how things were once. There are mines in the area too, so maybe it was busier in 1924 when the monument went up. Either way... I found the monument! I found the monument! You can jump up and down for joy with me... because that's what it will feel like for you when you get there as well. :)See more..
