  1. 4.5 Phillip Island Nature Parks - Penguin Parade (4.908 reviews)
    - Little penguins Big experience
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
Phillip Island Nature Parks - Penguin Parade image
What a delightful night experiencing the little penguins at such close quarters. The Penguin Plus ticket is certainly worth the extra cost as it is located for the best view of the penguins coming in from the sea and walking alongside the audience platform towards the hundreds of burrows. Don’t worry too much if you feel that you don’t have the perfect spot, as the penguins arrive in groups over a long period and people generally thin out on the platform sections and move towards the boardwalks. So there will be plenty of chances to see things from all spots. General admission ticket holders need to set their expectations as they are less likely to see the penguins coming in from the ocean. However GA will still see plenty of penguins close up from the boardwalk. It gets quite chilly after sundown so dress for the temperature drop and wind. Remember to put your phone away after the ranger talk as the lights from your phone or cameras scare the penguins and affect feeding the chicks. This unique experience is not to be missed. See more..

Marysville Trout and Salmon Ponds image
I've been here a few times now and the staff can be hit and miss as can the fishing. As an experienced angler, I know most of the tricks of the trade and it's rare that I wouldn't catch a trout but the students I had with me virtually had no luck. You can get you rods and tackle from the shed and pay a small fee. If you catch a trout you have to keep it. There is a lovely man there (sorry I've forgotten his name) who will gut and prepare the fish for you for to cook. There are plenty of tables and chairs around to sit on and even some undercover areas. You can come here most times but check out their website for further information. There is plenty of parking at the top of the hill at the entrance. Bring cash. Makes it easier for everyone. See more..
  39. 4.5 Buckley Falls (56 reviews)
    - Only minutes from Geelong CBD
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Waterfalls
    Buckley Falls image
As quiet park area on the edge of the urban sprawl. Australia is really flat, so for international visitors this is a cascade rather than falls... There is a parking bay close to the falls so the walk is only a couple hundred metres to the viewing platforms. You can view the falls with only a 25m walk from your car if you want. The walk is downhill on the way out, the path is well constructed with had rails which are needed due to the bluestone paving being a little uneven. There are more parking bays linked to the area and spots to sit and tables for picnics. So close to the CBD I cant think of a reason to miss it. See more..

    Mason Falls Picnic Ground image
My wife and I drove here for a walk and a picnic. We have not been here before and wanted to see what it is like. It is a pleasant and scenic place for hiking. There are BBQ facilities and plenty of tables and benches, next to the car park, to have a picnic. The walk to Mason Falls is around 1.2 km return. There are many trees to provide shade from the intense sunlight during summer. There is a lookout at Mason Falls that is very well presented. There is also Lyrebird Circuit walking trail which is very nice. I saw one Lyrebird during the walk. See more..

Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park adjoins an extensive lake system separated from the Tasman Sea by the sand dunes of Ninety Mile Beach. Swim, kayak, boat, or fish along the scenic expanses of sheltered water. Among the tranquil campgrounds, choose from 90 Mile Beach, Bunga Arm or Paradise Beach. Set sail on the Gippsland Lakes. Hire a yacht, boat, canoe or kayak, bring your own or join a tour. 90 Mile Beach is well known for its surf fishing, while the calm waters of Gippsland Lakes are great for catching salmon, tailor, whiting, flathead and bream. Pitch a tent along Shoreline Drive or Paradise Beach and hear the roar of the ocean in the distance. Or opt for the more remote fee based camping at Bunga Arm, only accessible by boat. See more..

    Lake Colac image
A vast freshwater lake surrounding g the town of Colac. Visited the parklands town side with a Lakeside walk, playground, Botanic gardens and reserve noted. Able to park my van under the extensive canopy to wait out the electrical storm and exyteme heat. Unfortunately due to conditions I was unable to fully explore on foot but have noted the area for future explorations. Lovely building facades, plenty of history and a yacht and bowls Club within the precinct along with shady tree canopy and winding pathways through the park. Only thing missing on the town side was a cafe or food venue. An opportunity missed? A place for all the family catering for groups, parties and outings with special memories sure to be created. Mount Franklin image
My wife and I visited this place on a Wednesday off peak season during our recent 3 days holiday in Daylesford. There were very few people around during our walk around the scenic 1.7 km circuit track. A new Visitor Centre and new toilets are currently being built near the car park area. Mt Franklin was created by a volcanic eruption about 470,000 years ago. The ground is bordered by conifer forest, and the crater has been covered with ornamental trees such as Silver Birch, White Poplar, Sycamore and Californian Redwoods. See more..

If tent camping with drop toilets and no drinking water is your theme than do not miss this one. Located within 10 min unsealed drive from Forest, this campground offer about 20 well maintained sites, fire pits and benches among surrounding by trees and ferns. About 1km walk will take you to the breathtaking lake Elizabeth (about 3 km to walk around it) with birds and platypus! The whole experience was extremely positive and highly recommend. A few notes about the logistics. Cars can not be parked next to the sites and we used the bottom 15 min unloading parking to get our stuff from the car. It is not a big deal and you can use a dolly if you have one. See more..
