  1. 4.5 Mait's Rest (862 reviews)
    - Nice place for a walk

This place is one of the major tourist attractions in Apollo Bay for valid reasons. The rainforest walking trail is superb. My wife and I drove to this place to do that walk, during our holiday in Lorne for three nights. There were very few visitors at the time of our visit as it was mid week off peak season. It was very easy to find a parking spot and very easy for social distancing during our walk as we did not see anyone else. See more..
  2. 4.5 Redwood Forest (193 reviews)
    - Visually stunning, Strikingly beautiful and a perspective of size.

A spectacular place for a day trip from Melbourne and a very short drive after visiting Warburton. Beautiful scenery and a great variety of photographic opportunities abound. This small forest of towering Sequoia redwood trees, is planted among Radiata pine and the natural bush setting that surrounds the plantation. Information boards are available if you want to learn the history of the planting. There are several well-marked trails, picnic spots and a walk along Cement creek as it snakes its way from Mt. Donna Buang and merges with the Yarra River at the edge of the park. Although being open 24 hours there are however, only 100 parking spots that fill up very quickly over busy holiday times and weekends. Arrive early to ensure you get a parking spot. There is also a one-way bridge crossing to the parking area that makes it that little bit more congested. Be aware, there are no toilet facilities and ensure you take your rubbish with you. Visited Cape Bridgewater today, specifically to see the petrified forest, it was amazing and we got some incredible photos. If you haven't been, and are in the Portland, Port Fairy, Warrnambool area, would definitely recommend a trip to see them. Had a look round Portland as well, what a picturesque town! See more..

These sequoias were planted as a trial in the 1930's, and the stand is now composed of tall straight beautiful mature trees. The litter on the forest floor is thick and soft underfoot, and the light is somewhat subdued by the canopies. A lovely spot. See more..

It seems that what’s not burned in the bush fires is still up for grabs to turn Into paper products. The Victorian Labor government is watching while logging of old growth native Forest happens in this beautiful carbon dense mountain ash native forest. Goodbye Greater Glider - never got a chance to meet you on a nighttime-spotto ecotourism treetop walk of my dreams. Please call or email the office of environment minister lily d’ambrosio or go to the top by contacting Premier Dan Andrews. So weird to be trying to bring tourists into regional Victoria to support fire affected communities in the same breath as logging in one of the remaining prime natural tourism destinations . Look at forest conservation Victoria and little red Toolangi treehouse for more info on this fight to protect our current and future forest/water/wildlife/eco assets. See more..
  7. 5.0 Marysville State Forest (5 reviews)
    - An excellent Sunday drive

    Marysville State Forest image
Heading north from Warburton, the road towards Marysville seems to climb foreever on a gentle grade, winding through a variety of landscapes, made even more interesting when you see the re-growth since the Black Saturday fires in 2009. But the highlight is clearly the thousands of tree ferns that line most of the road. See more..
  8. 5.0 Oak Forest (4 reviews)
    - Wooed by it's soft caresses

    Oak Forest image
You drive through into La Larr Ba Gauwa Park where you will immediately notice heaps of cars with bike racks... the area is at the base of Mt Alexander. When you arrive you will follow the dirt road pas the entrance area with signs and continue on... the road here is dreadful, you will need to slow. Whilst a four wheel drive would be recommended ... a two wheel drive could do this with care. The road will bring you to a sign to indicate you are at the Oak Forest, if you drive past that you will enter a camping area. Here you will find a park and then be able to walk through the forest. It is stunningly beautiful and at this time of year I could hear the crunch of the leaves that fell in Autumn as they carpet the paths you walk on. It's very still so you can lose yourself here. It's a really lovely place to go walking. See more..

Shelly Beach - Apollo Bay image
Located off the main road as you drive towards maits rest is this amazing bush walk down to a beach that you usually have all to yourself. It’s worth visited at low tide to explore the rock pools but also well worth a visit anytime. The walk through the ferns and forest is very pretty but moderately taxing. We did walk with two kids under 5 with no problems though. DIRECTIONS: from Apollo turn left down Elliot Rd and drove under 5 mins until you get to car park area. See more..
  10. 3.5 Heathcote-Graytown National Park (2 reviews)
    - Lose yourself in the natural beauty

    Heathcote-Graytown National Park image
Easily accessible by road, the park is a great place for bushwalks... the native flowers are scattered along the pathways. The trees with their varied colours are stunning and you can certainly lose yourself in the landscape. As you wander through the park, if you look up at the colours of the bark against the sky , you can find yourself catching your breath at times. The park hasn't got amenities that I noticed and some of the roads in the park are rough and it's recommended you only attempt them in a 4WD, but for the most part... it's accessible to everyone who wants to walk... all you need to do is pull into the park and pull over to one side. It's worth stopping if you want to stretch your legs. See more..
