The town was transformed into a major river port when the railway reached Echuca in 1864 and, with the opening of the Echuca Wharf, it realised substantial urban growth in the 1870s. In 1876, the Deniliquin and Moama Railway Company opened its 71 km long private railway northwards to Deniliquin. The brick station at Echuca was provided with the opening of the line, along with a double-gabled brick goods shed, and a three-road locomotive depot. All the buildings are quite striking. The concrete rail bridge over the Murray River, opened in February 1989, replacing a combined road and rail bridge that opened in 1878. The current tenants for the station are V/line who look after the rail/coach service to Melbourne. It is beautifully maintained. The staff were friendly and helpful. If you like old buildings, you really do need to put this one on your list to visit. See more..

This railway station is a beautifully renovated & maintained piece of history. The building is over 144 years old and other buildings in the town even older and still in use! The history is outlined in the rooms open to the public... a quick, free insight into the past. A couple live in half of the station building and are happy to provide a tour & description of the equipment too. See more..

The old railway station has recently been updated for higher frequency trains between Melbourne and Ballarat. There are now two platforms in use and an elevated crossing between them. The historic signal box is still there and the water tower (heritage listed) is out the front of the station. The station is comfortable inside and many old photos are on display. See more..

    Bullarto Railway Station image
This little railway station is etched in my memory from 60 years ago when a little rail motor ran once a day and it was the highlight of the day for a kid to run up and see it pass by. The rail motor is still there in a shed in Daylesford and the local Heritage railway still run from there to Bullarto on weekends when fallen trees are not blocking the way. The station is under a rebuild at the moment and it is great to see it will be restored as it was. It is a very scenic little station. See more..
