    - Attend the Choral Evensong
    Friday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    St Paul's Cathedral image
St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life. See more..

    - Best free experience in southern Victoria
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Fort Nepean image
What a grand experience this was to visit Fort Nepean. It is hard to believe that you can wander amongst old forts complete with a myriad of underground tunnels and sound effects - and all for free entry. The only 'cost' is a walk of 2.5 kms from the carpark after the entry into the Port Nepean National Park .... and it is an easy walk too! I believe this is one of the best free experiences in Victoria and certainly the best in southern Victoria! It is also so rare these days to visit well-preserved historic sites like this. Give yourself a few hours as you don't want to rush a trip through this fascinating place. You should note that there are no facilities (like cafe or shops) there, so take your own food and water. But there are toilets. See more..

A must see attraction if you are visiting the area. Allow at least 2 hours to take the guided tour (approx 1 Hour ) and have a good look around outside and in the stables. We learnt a lot of things about the people that lived here and the area in the late 1880's. Our National Trust Volunteer Guide (Cameron) was a super enthusiastic great communicator and story teller which made the tour very entertaining and informative. It really is something else to see . 19. 4.5 Fortuna Villa (53 reviews)

    Fortuna Villa image
We went to Fortuna Villa today and it was lovely. You get an hour to eat and hour to tour, which is enough time for both. Fortuna doesn't cater for allergies just keep that in mind when booking. The female tour guide was wonderful and so was the lady playing the harp. The only issue I thought was the tour group was very large, hard to squeeze everyone into the one room, without leaving people in the corridor, not being able to hear what your guide is saying. But overall a very enjoyable day. See more..

She painted dancing bolgas on the concrete silos - there are 3 so make sure you see the brolga on the back of the silo. In 2019, Sobrane added more birds, flora and colour to the steel silo. 24. 3.5 Beehive Mine Chimney (27 reviews)
    - Iconic part of the Maldon skyline
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Beehive Mine Chimney image
Completed in 1863 and standing 30 metres high, it is the only one of its age and size still standing in Victoria. Adjacent to the chimney can be seen the stone and brick substructures for the boilers and steam engine that provided the power for the mine. Some time after the mine’s closure in 1911, the chimney was purchased by T.B. Brooks (store owner) and W.E. Preece (town notary) as a monument to the gold won in Maldon and the town’s pioneers and miners. This is a short walk from the town centre and offers views over the town as you stand next to it. McLandress Square image
My father and I parked opposite to this small square and we were immediately drawn to the beauty of the architecture. The town’s civic centre features European-style heritage buildings including the imposing Italianate palazzo-style post office, which was built in 1877 and still serves as a post office today. The town hall was built in 1887 after the local council established there was a need for a large building to house public functions. Still retaining many of its original features, additions to the town hall in 1939 added a number of beautiful art deco features enhancing the rich detail of the building. In 1892, the Federation Free Classical style courthouse was designed and commissioned and this opened one year later. One of the largest courthouses outside of Melbourne, the building has served as a courthouse continuously since its inception. It's worth having a closer look at this square... parking is available nearby and it's easy to walk through the area. See more..

    Eaglehawk Town Hall image
The hall was built in 1901 on the site of an earlier town hall which had stood on the location since 1865. The architects were the Melbourne firm of Wilkinson and Permewan. The town hall is one of the most notable and dramatically sited of all Victorian provincial town halls, is an expressive example of the architecture of the Federation period. It's quite a statement piece for Eaglehawk.. you can't miss this prominent building... and nor should you. It's a stunning piece of architecture. This sumptuous building of brick and stone featuring a central clock tower, reflects prevailing architectural fashion and was a remarkable investment for a town consisting predominantly of poor mining families. Serviceton Historic Railway Station image
We would have been happy just admiring this wonderful heritage site but, then, its long-time caretaker materialised and made a joking offer to sell the place to us for a quick million. Mr Millikan, long retired from life as a shearer and dozer driver, turned out to be the kindest and most amusing guide, opening up locked waiting rooms and cellars and telling us the history. He's been volunteering in this role for 12 years and has added to the value of the history experience with collections of railways remnants and all manner of antique country paraphernaila. The station is huge and very handsome, once in South Australia but suddenly in Victoria with a boundary adjustment. Its has a rich socxial travelling history and also a sad history in that war prisoners in tranasit were shackled in the cellar. Now, while it has no passengers or trains, it still has big kitchens and from time to time it comes alive for weddings. See more..

    Redesdale Bridge image
The Redesdale Bridge is one of the oldest iron lattice-truss bridges in Victoria and while it has a stamp for 1867 on it... it wasn't finished until 1868. Prominent Melbourne engineer T B Muntz designed the bridge and it was built at a cost of £6274. The trusses were originally intended for a deck truss design, but were adapted to allow their use as through trusses with stiffening arches connecting them above the roadway. Two separate roadways with an intervening stone pillar separating them have caused problems for modern traffic. This bridge is really amazing to look at... and it's quite elegant in an old fashioned sense. See more..

    North British Mine image
This is a historically significant mine site but is poorly presented. It was privately owned by Robert Oswald and some others and follwed his search for gold at Parkins Reef in 1858. He called it the North British Mine because of his Scottish roots. By 1887 it was described as one of the richest mines world-wide.Oswald managed the site for thirty years and apparently died there in an accident. By 1927 it was closed and later bull-dozed for safety reasons. 39. 5.0 Echuca Wharf (9 reviews)
    - Reconstructed wharf
    Historic Sites
    Echuca Wharf image
The Echuca Wharf has been reconstructed to it's original design including the curve of the structure following the alignment of the riverbank. It has been reconstructed using redgum timbers from nearby forests, however the front two rows are square ironbark piles. Ironbark can stand regular wetting and drying, much better than redgum. All the piles were originally square, but they have been replaced by round piles over time. A number of original timbers were re-used in the reconstruction. It's the same length as the original wharf, built in 1865. It was extended in 1874 and again in 1879 and 1884. At it's longest it measured 332 metres. During the War much of the wharf was demolished and used to stoke fires of munitions factories and for household heating. See more..

In the heart of Cobram in Federation Park beside Woolies sits this remarkable heritage log cabin. Dated back to 1874 when the Toms family arrived in region. A local guide suggested it’s known to be haunted. As I entered on a still warm day, was fairly ‘unlikely’ (guess try dusk with some wind rattling). Quite humbling to view the basic, tight and work-intensive layout of a late 19th century country cabin. It wouldn't be right not to stop to pay one's respect to Granny, would it? This was so unusual that we sought it out. So who was Granny? This grave marks the burial site of Agnes Ruttleton who died in 1848. She is recorded as the first white woman to be buried in Warrnambool. She lived with her crayfish-catching husband in a tent nearby, his name was James. It's remarkable that the grave is still there in such a prominent location and somehow ... it's right. I doubt that 'Granny' would ever have realised that she would be remembered over one hundred and seventy years later. And THAT'S what makes this grave remarkable... we remember this European resident that lived with few physical comforts. See more..
