Corporal Gerald Wilkinson Drinking Fountain image
In 1903 a memorial drinking fountain was erected in front of the Town Hall. Designed and made by George Daws, a Melbourne monumental mason, it commemorates Gerald Wilkinson, Maryborough's first war casualty, who was killed in action in 1901 during the Boer War. But let's sit with that for a moment? Who exactly was he? Gerald Massey Ivor Wilkinson, of Tullibardine's Scottish Horse, who was killed in action at Elandskloof, South Africa, on 3rd July, 1901. It's a beautiful monument to the man that has been lost in the archives of history, but clearly he was once very important to the community. See more..
