Secret sacred garden

Hepburn Pool is a forgotten treasure which many visitors to Hepburn Springs would never be aware of. The owners of the Bellinzona Grange hotel explained that it was once the hotel pool and was built in the 1930's. You can find it behind this hotel, downhill at a street called The Pool Way. Steps and a ramp continue down to the pool itself and the secluded park around it. It was built into Spring Creek and became a competition pool for state swimming championships. A concrete weir separates a shallow children's pool from the main pool. You can still see the numbers of each lane painted on the walls at the deep end. There are plenty of seats and a barbeque area. A sign says this is a sacred aboriginal spot and you can certainly feel something magical about the place. I wouldn't suggest swimming in the former pool, it looks rather murky now.

    Old Hepburn Pool
It wasn't easy to find - we couldn't see any signs to it on the main road. We headed down Sixth Street (opposite Rubens) and towards the bottom of the street we found signs leading to the pool. The pool is a dammed up part of Spring Creek, and is significant for it's history. It was made Olypmic size and was used for Victorian swimming championships in the 1930's. The creek was in flood when we were there and it was too cold and muddy for swimming, but it would be a pleasant place on a hot day. There are no change rooms. From here there is a track that leads back to the mineral springs area.

    Mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings visiting this "attraction". The hotel we stayed at said there was a historic pool at the back so we asked for directions and went for a walk. You can imagine when the pool first opened how nice it would have been. People in their bathing costumes etc. Positive feeling.... Now, it is very neglected and this is after it has been restored? There are a number of hand made/hand painted signs saying "Aboriginal land - Enter at own risk". The bench that was there is dilapidated. It didn't meet our expectations for a historic site. So negative feeling there. All in all, I was glad to see it - we took a short walk there and back, it was free and we didn't go out of our way to see it. If it isn't out of your way and you have some spare time it is ok to visit, wouldn't recommend it otherwise.
