Lake Benalla Walking Track, Victoria, Australia

Picturesque landscape

The first time I walked around this lake was with my mother about thirteen years ago... it was quite beautiful with rose gardens. Fast forward to recent times and I visited again. My memory is imprinted a little differently to the landscape that is there now. It's been slightly altered and Benalla continues to evolve as a rural town making it a place to go. It is now a destination in itself. The 4.25 kilometre track is stunning. You can choose how much of it you want to walk, or you can take advantage of the seating along it's edge taking a break to enjoy the breathtaking serenity. Lake Benalla provides habitat for numerous birds from ducks and pelicans to cockatoos and kookaburras and you will definitely see them here. When I wandered around here it was late in the afternoon on a Friday and I was surprised there were not more people taking advantage of this beautiful area...but then, Covid has changed things so much. .. Still it's worth masking up and going for a walk.

    Quick tan walk
Lovely walking track around the lake of Benalla. You cross 2 bridges to complete the full circle. The other circle is south of the bridge road bridge thru and past the football club rather than the art gallery side. Plenty of ducks to feed. There are 3 large ducks resident on the lake plus 50+ normal sized ducks. There is gym stations placed around the walk.

Very interesting walk through informal parkland
We really enjoyed walking the figure 8 track around the Lake. The path was in good condition. The views of the Lake were pictuaresque. We saw numerous varieties of indigenous birds and animals, many from close up. The River Redgums were a delight to see, many with nesting holes where limbs had broken off. Some of the gums had numerous shells of cicadas that had grolwn out of their old skin. Some trees had the comb nests from small native wasps built onto the bark. We all enjoyed the "nature walk" and were envious that Melbourne does not have anything like it. We appreciated the contrast between the flat, dry land that surrounds Benalla and this oasis in the centre of the city. Well done Benalla.
