Ess Lagoon Reserve, Victoria, Australia

4.5 (16 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Casterton Bodies of Water

Free camping

Ess lagoon is a free camping area in Casterton. It's a lovely setting, quiet, surrounded by paddocks. Its within a 5 min walk of the shops & the caravan park. It would be even lovelier if the Kelpie Trail was maintained better but already its getting a bit muddy to walk around & down to the river. Lots of birds & in the past I have seen a young echidna toddling along down by the lagoon. There are also small tortoises but I think they hibernate over winter (unsure).

    Peaceful
On visit to Casterton saw sign to this lagoon and decided to take a look. What a lovely area so close to town with picnic tables available under beautiful river red gums. Spotted a family out fishing with their children. Really worth a visit.

    Peaceful water views
Enjoyed an overnight stay right next to the lagoon. Quiet spot, walking distance to town centre. 3 hotels but only one did lunches. The meal from the Glenelg Inn was woeful. Town has the most amazing variety of architecture. Lots of Art Deco.
