    - Amazing guided tour!
Tuesday: Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • History Museums
    Shriver House Museum image
You may know what happened on battlefield . . . but what happened to the civilians? During the Battle of Gettysburg, George Shriver was serving in the Union army. When Confederate soldiers filled the streets of town, Hettie Shriver worried about the safety of their daughters, Mollie (5) and Sadie (7), as well as their home. She sought safety at her family's farm by Big Round Top, where some of the fiercest fighting took place. Her empty house was seized by Confederates who set up a sharpshooters nest in the attic where at least two soldiers were killed. Tour guides in period attire recount the Shrivers harrowing story as you walk from the bloodstained sharpshooters' nest in the attic, through the finely appointed home, to Shriver's Saloon in the cellar. The house was abandoned for nearly thirty years before being painstakingly restored to its original appearance in 1996. The Shrivers' story is a most intriguing stories when it comes to the civilian aspect of the battle. See more..

    - Quiet Surprise

    Lehigh County Heritage Center image
A hidden gem! While this museum celebrates Lehigh County history, its collection and scope has surprising breadth and truly something for everyone. I was treated to a wonderful tour by the Executive and Assistant Directors whose passion for their work was impressive. The native American room has some wonderful artifacts and their collection of Lincoln photos tracks his life across many years. Of course, information about local philanthropists abounds; but it is a number of wonderful portraits that really brings these folks to life. If you are a history buff or just have a passing interest, you will find this museum a great place to pass an afternoon. See more..

The Army personnel who were there the day we were there (thank all you for your service!) could NOT have been any nicer! They were literally running around after each other exclaiming, "Open this one up for the guys!". We latched on to a retired chaplain who was SO friendly, SO funny, SO interesting, SO knowledgeable...I simply can't say enough good things about him. He took us around inside & outside of the hangar and was a wealth of knowledge. Keep in mind...there's not a LOT to look at and you won't be there all day, but what you DO get to see and hear about it is very much worth the journey. And did I mention that it's FREE? It is! They happily accept donations if you would like. We got to go INSIDE some old army planes and walk around others. If you're into this kind of thing and are in the area, I heartily suggest you make a stop here. See more..

Lived in the area for a few years and passed the property many times. Finally stood in line for 45 minutes to view the mansion during the holiday tour. It was a festive afternoon with Santa and bell ringers and glowing lanterns. Went back with friends a few days later for the regular tour. We rang the front door bell and a few minutes later we were ushered in. It was a wonderful fact filled tour. The docent filled our heads with facts and info we did not hear when we were there for the holiday tour. It was an hour that tour that flew by. Will take more friends there and take advantage of other events. See more..

    Pennsylvania State Police Museum image
The Pennsylvania State Police is the first in the nation starting in 1905. It is well respected and has a long history. Due to this history, the musium was started several years ago buy some of the retired members. This is a small musium, not much room for several displays but it is behind the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. The musium is growing slowly but with fiscal restrants it is doing the best It can. Beside some very nice displays, there are several State Police items that can be purchased. If you are lucky, the cadet's may be outside training or on the firing range. The Academy in itself is something to drive by. See more..
