  15. 4.5 Trexler Nature Preserve (58 reviews)
    - A Great Day Trip
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Trexler Nature Preserve image
We have not visited in about 20 years. We only had one day free during the summer and we are so glad that we decided to go back to Trexler. Indeed, this is one of the hidden gems in southeastern Pennsylvania. You can travel through the game preserve at no cost. It's easy to forget where you are. The bison and elk are really something to see, especially along the rolling hills. The same is true of the hiking trails. The zoo is small, but the animals are diverse and fascinating. The admission is very reasonable, and the food in the zoo is also reasonably priced. We will come back soon and bring some friends. Trexler is about 90 minutes north of Philadelphia and it is just west of Allentown. See more..
  16. 4.5 T & D's Cats of the World (53 reviews)
    - Very nice sanctuary for the animals
Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Zoos
T & D's Cats of the World image
Great sanctuary. Tigers, bears, monkeys, deer, and so much more. They all have beautiful enclosures that give them a sense of being in the wild. Nice paths to walk around with numerous people positioned at different locations to answer questions. There is an aviary as well but it was closed during our visit. Nice small gift shop. They do ask that you don’t make noises at the animals or run or be loud so you don’t stress them out. Allow plenty of time to stroll through. There were lots of cars when we were there but it didn’t feel crowded at all. There is also an area with picnic baskets. Port-a-potties. See more..

    Trexler Memorial Park image
This is without a doubt one of the best parks I've been to. This park is large so allow pleanty of time. There is a small lake with ducks and geese and a waterfall Much of the walking trail is small open fields with deep woods in the background. In some places the woods are close to the trail. The cabin belonging to Mr. Trexlar still exists6 This is a great way to see the forest without entering the woods. See more..

...in an old cemetery. Historic, faded tombstones randomly here and there - a spot of life and death. So much snow; I'm sure things covered and I couldn't see all. A nice place to come in good weather with a very awesome amphitheater to see and hear art. Oh again I fell - second time in only weeks. Not really hard at all but enough to make me know what I don't want to. See more..

Sweet Arrow Lake County Park image
Two weekends ago I had the privledge of shooting a wedding at Sweet Arrow Lake in Pine Grove, PA. It is literally one of the most beautiful areas with the Fall foilage and scenery. If you are looking for an outdoor site to get hitched and you are in this area, you are just in luck. See more..

The 571-acre Stroud Preserve is a mosaic of once-pastured grasslands, working farmlands, and woodlands that serves as a unique site for recreation, education, and scientific research. Stroud Preserve is one of many nature preserves owned and cared for by non-profit land conservation organization Natural Lands. As the Greater Philadelphia region’s oldest and largest land conservation organization, Natural Lands has preserved more than 125,000 acres, including 43 nature preserves totaling more than 23,000 acres. Blue Marsh Lake image
Blue Marsh gets a bad rap. It is a beautiful lake filled with many types of fish including large mouth and small mouth bass. If you are a bird watcher, or just like wild life in general, this is the perfect setting for that. I can’t talk on the cleanliness of the bathrooms or beach, but if you like boating, fishing and relaxing then this is the place for you. See more..

We were visiting the town and wanted a less than 2 hour hike. We had kids from age 4 to 10, and did the shorter steeper ascent and descent. It was really fun for the kids and the adults. The views are lovely, go early otherwise it is crowded. There are also longer hikes, which we hope to explore next time. See more..
  24. 4.5 Buttermilk Falls Natural Area (32 reviews)
    - Buttermilk Falls Natural Area
Spent < 1 hour Nature & Wildlife Areas • Waterfalls
    Buttermilk Falls Natural Area image
This site is about 20 minutes from where we live so we try to go once a year. For a smaller falls area, it is a great natural area to get out and walk around. The falls are about 45 feet in height. The falls were running heavier the day we visited - we have been here in the summer and the falls are much smaller then. There is a well maintained path and bridge that is built over the creek. There are now stairs to the bottom of the falls and you can actually walk behind the falls. There are 2 other smaller falls in the area and looks to be some stone foundation ruins nearby. There is an information board with pamphlets and map of the falls area. This land was owned by the McFeely's which were the grandparents of Fred Roger's from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. There are a few picnic tables under roof and restrooms onsite. There are a few walking trails (which I have never been on) Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash. See more..

    - Rumor

The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College image
Rumor has it that the state was planning on building a highway through the Swarthmore College campus, but that someone found a law that forbade the State from building highways through arboratums, so Swarthmore started planting trees. All I can say is that when flowers start blooming in the Spring,I doubt there's a place in Pennsylvania more beautiful than Swarthmore's campus. See more..

I loved this park! It was so beautiful even though it was raining the day we were there. I did the prayer/meditation labyrinth and it felt like a load was lifted off my shoulders. The gazebo and stone bridge make beautiful backdrops for photos. There is a small maze of trees also. The trees and wetlands are beautiful. I actually risked getting all soaked to go down the slide and I'm glad I did. Truly an experience. See more..

    Kettle Creek State Park image
Stayed here on a solo trip. A site on the creek in the lower campground. Quiet, peaceful, and beautiful are only a start to describe this place. Sites are good space wise. 30amp electric available at most sites. Bathhouse was kept clean. Only issue is the shower water is on a 7 second timer when you press the button. If they could bump that up to 20 seconds would be great. For mid July the temperatures were mid to upper 80’s. Very few bugs on this trip. Just the chirping of birds all day. I’ll definitely be coming back here in the future. See more..

I stopped by in the late afternoon of July 4th and I was the only one there! It made me feel like it was my personal garden. First let me say, I want to live in that Gardener's Cottage! I would even do the gardening! The house and entire property is beautiful. I like how the garden is divided up into "rooms". I love garden walls and this garden has a few! 44. 5.0 Bear Run Nature Reserve (15 reviews)
    - Peaceful forest experience
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Bear Run Nature Reserve image
I'm almost reluctant to review this because if more people discover how fabulous it is it won't be as exclusive as I've experienced it. Trails meander through different forest types alongside and crossing over pristine mountain streams. In May one enjoys blooming Mt. Laurel, in June/July Rhododendron and multicolored leaves in fall. Many days I've been on the reserve and not seen another human. The Arbutus Trail is one of my favorites especially when spring wildflowers are blooming. Take a guide book along with you to identify them. It's free and open 24/7. Thank you to the Western PA Conservancy for maintaining this property for all to enjoy. See more..

Despite all the recent flooding the trails running through the reserve were very well maintained. The woods are full of mature trees and you could see and hear some birds. It is close to a school, rail line and road, but even so it was relatively peaceful. The green ribbon trail that runs through it connects to Fort Washington state park. My son Grayden and I love this lake. We are abid kayak fisherman. the launch is great for my old knees. After sitting for hours on the water it's a welcome friend for standing up. We were there today for 6 hours. We were fishing by the island and we were blessed to have 3 deer come out and walk the waters edge. They just went about there day as we watched and continued fishing. We caught a combination of fish. Bass Perch and of course sunnies. As we were paddling out 2 men in a boat had hooked something big. As we watched him fight a great fight he lost after a huge Muskie leaped high out of the water. With his head on his hands I wished him luck on the next one See more..
