  4. 4.0 Jim Thorpe Memorial (296 reviews)
    - Small town that changed its name to honor a Native American Olympian,
    Monuments & Statues
    Jim Thorpe Memorial image
We came here to see the small town that changed its name to honor an Olympian, and get more tourists. By the sight of the mobbed streets today, they met their goal. It's such an interesting story about a “Sac-Fox Nation” Native American that excelled to become a national hero, over time. With such resistance to the acknowledgement of his accomplishments following his 1953 death, his widow made a good decision in accepting this outcome. His gravesite is a worthy tribute and it's in the state where he began his sport’s career. We drove on to see some of the town’s architectural sites. See more..
  5. 5.0 State of Pennsylvania Monument (226 reviews)
    - Monument with so much
    Monuments & Statues
    State of Pennsylvania Monument image
This is my favorite monument in the park. It is huge and has a lot to offer. The panels along the bottom have names of those that were from Pennsylvania and part of the battle. If you look close, you will find names that have been scratched out. This was done by veterans of the war, and the people crossed off were people that did not act honorably. Then as you walk around you find this area has a lot more to offer. Then to make this even more impressive, in one of the walls up the steps is a staircase that will take you to the top of the monument and give you great views. It also has some metal plates marking things that took place in the battle. Overall, if you don't have a lot of time, this should be one of the things that are a must for you. Tust me it is worth it. 6. 4.5 Lincoln Statue at Wills House (210 reviews)
    - Nice surprise to come across this statue

Lincoln Statue at Wills House image
We had parked our car in a garage, and were making our way to the Blue & Gray Bar & Grill, when we were pleasantly surprised by this statue. We had not sought it out, but now, we would. There is such a connection of President Lincoln to Gettysburg, that one never questions, “What is this doing here?” This sculpture, titled “Return Visit”, is the most true to life statue of Abraham Lincoln ever created. There are a few parking spots right in front, and, while we were there, saw travelers scoot in, get out of the car, take a photo, and run back and drive off. It, definitely, is a statue that is worth seeing. See more..

The Eternal Light Peace Memorial image
I live in the Gettysburg area and really enjoy The Eternal Light Peace Memorial off of Mummasburg Road. We used to go there in the evening when I was growing up and was a favorite stopping place. It was commemorated in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The flame is always on, although there was a period of time when it was not. See more..
  9. 5.0 Virginia Memorial (155 reviews)
    - Standing Tall On the Field
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Virginia Memorial image
Confederate Avenue on which this monument stands is quieter than Hancock Avenue (the Union side) and by my accounts gives you more room to breath and truly ponder what both sides were facing right before Pickett's charge. The cannons, the fences, the hills and the open fields all lend perspective to the event. Then there is the Virginal Memorial topped by Robert E. Lee. Standing strong, gazing across the field, this is an amazing memorial to Virginia, its army, and its military leader. See more..
  10. 4.5 Phil's Burrow (126 reviews)
    - Nice option to see Punx Phil
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Phil's Burrow image
This is likely a hit or miss attraction because you’re expecting to see a ground hog that may or may not be cooperative for viewing and will most likely be sleeping. We had reasonable expectations, and sure enough one of the two was sleeping in a corner, though we believe it was Punx Phil that happened to be eating. We viewed from inside the library and outside, though the library was a far better view. We took a walk through town and when we came back both were sleeping. This was definitely off the beaten path, a little over an hour from Pittsburgh, but it’s a slice of Americana that I’m happy we experienced (even during the summer!). See more..
  11. 4.5 Quecreek Mine Rescue Site (104 reviews)
    - History we shouldn't forget

    Quecreek Mine Rescue Site image
We got there later in the afternoon but the docent was very kind and offered all sorts of extra information. She took her time with us and answered all our questions. We had just missed one of the 9. She said they come through quite often. There were a lot of interactive things where you could hear and see the original 9 in the days after as well as some of the rescue footage. What dedication this community has to keep this site open to the public. The outdoor space is easily reached and gives you further insight into the events that took place. We combined with a trip to Flight 93 Visitor Center. Easily done. Then we went to dinner at Gourmet Buffet in Somerset Commons. Made for a good day. See more..

  13. 4.5 East Cavalry Battlefield (95 reviews)
    - Great Cavalry battle
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Battlefields • Monuments & Statues
    East Cavalry Battlefield image
If you are a real Civil War buff as I am...you will like this place! It is located away from the main battlefield and it was the site of a great cavalry battle! Confederate general Jeb Stuart and his cavalry attempted, at about the same time that "Pickets charge" was about to take place, to defeat any remnants of the Union army fleeing the main battlefield. However he was met by a Union cavalry with cavalry charges back and forth across this field! Eventually the Union cavalry repulsed the Confederate charge! One of the hero's of this charge and whose statue is shown above was George Armstrong Custer, who after the Civil War fought, was ambushed and killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn by the Sioux indians! Markers describe this battle in detail....quiet, interesting site! See more..
  14. 4.5 North Carolina Monument (94 reviews)
    - A Great Place to Start
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    North Carolina Monument image
The North Carolina Monument is a great place to start a driving tour of the battlefield because it is easy to pull off, look at canons and take in the monument. The statue itself has lots of detail and captures the faces of individual soldiers. It is unlike most any other monument on the field. If you stop, be sure to walk further out into the open grass to gaze across at the Union side and picture what it must have been like to have to charge across that field with thousands of troops and their own cannon ready to hit you. High Water Mark of the Rebellion Monument image
I spent hundreds of hours studying the battle and intentionally waited to the last hours of my last day there to visit the Copse of Trees and The Angle. It's kind of like the end of a great horrible puzzle when it all comes together. It is a must that you know all about the battle before visiting Gettysburg - then this final visit will feel almost etherial. See more..

  18. 4.0 Braddock Grave (37 reviews)
    - Learned Some History with This Stop
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Braddock Grave image
It doesn't take long to visit Braddock's grave site and to learn he originally was buried in the middle of the road in 1755 to prevent is body from being found by French troops and their Indian allies. There are two trails to the grave, one with steps and another around the trace of the original road if you cannot use the steps, but it is longer. Along that original road you will reach a sign after a few minutes stating you are at the location of Braddock's original, hidden grave. When we were there, they were building a new walk around the grave, so it was difficult to get around all four sides to read the different inscriptions. I expect it will be reopened soon, however. Stopping at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield not too far away will provide a great deal more information on Braddock and his relationship to George Washington. See more..

This is a unique monument to our Civil War veterans. Allentown has a proud history in the Civil War, sending some of the first Federal troops to defend DC right after the firing on Fort Sumpter. Additionally, these troops were the ones subjected to assault by Confederate sympathizers as they travelled by foot through Baltimore, MD. Allentown has several Medal of Honor recipients buried from that period in our city cemeteries. See more..

George Taylor, is probably most prominently known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence, representing Pennsylvania. He was also an ironmaster at Durham Furnace (in what is now Bucks County), clerk at Warwick Iron Furnace and Coventry in Chester County (where he eventually become manager of this 1796-acre plantation. He practiced law, was appointed an early Justice of the Peace and a representative to the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from Northampton County. Pennsylvania Anthracite Miner's Memorial image
A moving memorial dedicated to the many that lost their lives mining coal. Many of these immigrants came to the U.S. seeking a better way of life. With little education and means they worked in many positions which often had them gambling with their lives. One of the displays at the memorial is a six ton piece of Anthracite. Upper Saint Clair Veterans Park image
...laser-engraved I believe - beautiful! Aside from honoring servicemen and women, on the reverse sides they kind of educate one a little about the different services to include the Merchant Marines which I thought was kind of nice as you don't usually see them included in anything like this. The fronts have awesome scenes from the services etched on them. This place is not really a park but more a monument or memorial set on the edge of the town's municipal complex parking lot. A little different than other municipal veteran memorials in that it is not really plastered with names of individual veterans (usually categorized by war) but is more service-oriented. Location... I don't know - I guess it makes for good access but set in a parking lot? For some reason, I'd like to see monuments like this in more natural surroundings. I'm thinking something like the Peace Memorial Park in Okinawa - talk about a standard. You know it took me a little over an hour to walk here from where I stay. I guess I'm getting to see all the little treasures in the area I live during my almost daily walks. I got to keep up the exercise, so I'm sure I'll be back here. I wonder what this little log cabin across the street is all about. See more..
  37. 4.0 Historic Stone Chimneys (1 review)
    - Unusual Museum (of Sorts), The Historic Stone Chimneys
    Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Historic Stone Chimneys image
The historic stone chimneys are all that remains of the popular Turner Inn that was destroyed by fire in 1952. They stand as a memorial to the man who actually built them and his skill. The Chimneys are lighted at night along the famous National Road (now U.S. Route 40) in Pennsylvania, not too far from Braddock's Grave and Fort Necessity National Battleground. It does not take long to read the information associated with this "museum" and study the chimneys. Oddly, there are full-scale statues of horses which are not explained on any of the signs at this little stop. There also is a brick-making machine of the type the builder used to make his bricks. Recommended if you already are in the area for the grave and battlefield. There is no real address for this site, but the internet shows the Plus Code is V888+7P Hopwood, Pennsylvania, USA. ... that most municipalities put up to honor military, police, firefighters; this one in a garden setting. They also gotta small metal beam from the World Trade Center in NY that came down during 9/11. I pass by the place all the time, and I just took a few minutes out to look at and learn a little about what is going on here. It's really small and it doesn't take much time to see. Glad I gotta see the beam. They also got engraved bricks on the ground that anyone can buy and have a name put on to honor whatever. I once thought about doing that at different places with my name on it. Actually gave that some thought for a long time before realizing how stupid that would be. Anyway there was a police officer in the parking lot who saw me come and walk around the place. As I was going back to my car, he waved. Why do I like the police so much and I feel safe around them? Lots of other people, especially those who don't look like me, don't. See more..
  39. 5.0 Adams War Memorial (1 review)
    - I had to get out
    Monuments & Statues
Staying home all the time is mentally draining, so I went for a ride. It wasn't lost on me what's going on in the hospitals right now, and I was feeling guilty about going out during the hour or so it took me to get here (and also back for that matter) - like I'm being disrespectful or selfish or committing some kind of transgression. Must be something cultural inside of me. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm not. Whatever - here is a nice looking veterans memorial with a statue, flags, benches, and engraved bricks with the names of some veterans. When I first approached there were these two ladies walking back and forth reading all the bricks. I think they were looking for someone in particular. I didn't want to disturb them (or get close), so I waited about 20 minutes for them to finish. I wonder who they were looking for and how that veteran served. I checked out this park's town website and saw anyone can buy a brick for $125 and honor a veteran. I've actually thought about buying bricks with my name on it before. One place I remember thinking about doing that at was Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado. Isn't that stupid to do something like that to honor yourself? See more..

...excellent ratings from me. How could they not? This one is in the town where I'm now staying, so I passed by to take a look on my way to nowhere in particular. It is a pretty extensive monument for a small town. Lots of names engraved everywhere in this area. One that stood out to me was for Joseph Chmelynski. He was an Army First Sergeant, World War II veteran wounded in combat, and a Bethel Park police officer killed in the line of duty. I read a little bit about him online afterwards.
