  4. 5.0 The Arboretum at Penn State (535 reviews)
    - Must see for flower lovers
    Gardens
The Arboretum at Penn State image
I visit the arboretum every time I visit State College, twice a year at least. The place is different each time, with seasonal blooms brightening the day. Beautiful lotus pond. Plenty of signage for those who are curious about plant names. They just opened a new section designed for attracting pollinators. Tucked around behind the restrooms is a paved area which is etched to represent the local watershed, showing all the local creeks and rivers. Interesting perspective. The children's area is well laid out and should prove stimulating for young kids. There are plenty of shaded and sunny benches scattered throughout the arboretum. Best free attraction in town. Note that construction has just begun on the new art museum next door, so the free parking lot no longer exists. Park next door for $1 per hour. See more..

    Gardens
Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation image
Located on the Ben Franklin parkway, The Barnes Foundation is known for its enviable collection of impressionist and modern art and just as important, the environmentally-conscious building which showcases them. Albert C. Barnes founded the museum after collecting several major works but he also wanted to emphasize nature and her environs. His namesake institution, therefore, made a concerted effort to blend the showcasing of art in harmony with nature. The building relies on natural light to illuminate her galleries; pools of water outside to install calm; and courtyards filled with trees and nature. Contactless ticketing is in effect and there is close monitoring of capacity levels in the galleries. The collection features African art; antiquities from China, Egypt and Greece; impressionist and modern art; Native American art; objects from around the world; and famous works from Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and more. - Joseph's Heaven
    Gardens
    Allentown Rose Gardens image
In June of 2001, I lost my son Joseph shortly after birth. Lehigh Valley hospital had a program where at their expense you have the option of sprinkling your babies ashes there. If you ever notice, back by the one gazebo towards the stream is a plaque in the ground stating here lies my child. Some may feel uncomfortable with my decision, but for me there is no other place i would like to pay my respects to my son Joseph because he lies with beautiful roses, baby birds flying. Very comforting to me to visit him there. The only thing that is missing are the harps playing angel music. So next time you visit or visit for the 1st time know they are angels guiding over of of you. ❤ See more..

The former home of the Haas family, the grounds have been preserved as a beautiful public garden. It is a great place to walk around, see some beautiful flowers, or even relax and enjoy nature. The terrain is mostly flat, and there are paths for most of the walking. Entry is free, and there is a free parking lot as well. The Philadelphia area is lucky to have so many public gardens to walk through - so many, that there is even a passport to keep track of everywhere to go! I stopped by in the late afternoon of July 4th and I was the only one there! It made me feel like it was my personal garden. First let me say, I want to live in that Gardener's Cottage! I would even do the gardening! The house and entire property is beautiful. I like how the garden is divided up into "rooms". I love garden walls and this garden has a few! So much character and charm. The house is beautiful and that barn is one of the most beautiful barns I've ever seen! See more..

The daylilies are amazing, row after row of them, but the perennials are equal in beauty. Bring your lunch and eat under the arbor or just in a chair looking at the lilies. Roam, savor the aroma, and shop...The Lambertson's are friendly and welcoming. They are only open in July and August so make a plan to be there next year!!! Out in the country but well worth the trip from any place. DO NOT MISS!!! See more..

Shrines & Sunken Gardens At Mount Assisi image
Stopped here while passing through town. Beautiful place to walk around. Felt very much at peace. Lots of beautiful religious statues and gardens. The friars should market this more and host programs as I think it would be a wonderful place to go on pilgrimage/retreat for Catholics in the northeast (though obviously you don’t have to be Catholic to enjoy the gardens). Also recommend Saint Michael’s Basilica. Would love to visit again. See more..

  24. 5.0 Remember Me Rose Garden (1 review)
    - Beautiful Memorial!
    Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Gardens
    Remember Me Rose Garden image
The “Remember Me” Rose Garden – Flight 93 is located across from the Flight 93 National Memorial Park on 13 acres. The rose, a beautiful symbol of love, concern and sympathy, is America’s national flower. So, it is the perfect flower to honor those who died on September 11, 2001. The names of these special roses are: Firefighter, Soaring Spirits, Forty Heroes, We Salute You, The Finest, Patriot Dream, Survivor, and Wings of Courage. These roses can be purchased at your local nursery. The rose industry has been generous and supportive in this endeavor and a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of “Remember Me” roses will be donated to the “Remember Me” Rose Gardens. The Rose Garden is a living memorial to the memory of the heroes of Flight 93. They have planted a ring of 432 “Julie Andrews” pink rose bushes inside a garden that doubles as a natural 280-feet-in-diameter compass. Boulders form the compass, and 93-foot-long rows of smaller rocks carve out its north, south, east and west directional points – a sign for passing planes above that they are crossing into an area where United Flight 93 fell. There is a fountain in the center with 40 rocks engraved with each of the names of the passengers and crew of Flight 93. They have a circle of benches to provide a place for quiet reflection. In Cross Plaza, you find the 16-foot-tall wooden cross that became one of the first items placed at the original, makeshift Flight 93 memorial in September 2001 surrounded by 20 rocks. Encircling the garden is “Ryan’s Trail”, a ½ mile walking trail with teakwood benches for rest, prayer and meditation. This is truly a beautiful memorial. See more..
  25. 4.0 Phs Meadowbrook Farm (1 review)
    - A small masterpiece of a garden
    Gardens
PHS Meadowbrook is a small jewel of a garden that is entirely free. The house and lands were donated by the Pennock family to the Philadelphia Horticulture Society and employees have done a wonderful job in creating garden “rooms.” It isn’t very big (you can tour the cultivated gardens and adjoining plant shop 30+ minutes), but I highly recommend doing a second lap because you’ll probably overlook some spots on your first pass through and it’s simply lovely to sit and enjoy the plants and water features. Similar to some of the other PA gardens this is a place with attention to the details. You can picnic here as well. The staff is incredibly friendly and happy to answer any questions. At the time I visited, the gardens also featured sculptural art as well, which was a nice touch, and still had a lot of flowers in bloom despite being early Fall. It’s located in a residential area (no public transportation services) that involves some country-like roads. If you’ve never been here before I strongly encourage coming on a nice day. That said, portions of Abington Township (where the gardens are located) are simply stunning so it is a nice place to get “lost” and admire the homes in the area. Note that this garden is only open April-October, hours are limited (Wed-Sat only; closed on Sun) and the garden is definitely not wheelchair/stroller friendly either. Even though this was a hike, we'd absolutely visit this place again next year. See more..
