Hidden Gems Places To Visit in Pennsylvania, United States
- 5.0 Beth Sholom Synagogue (100 reviews)
-A Living Monument to two men who shared a vision for "An American Synagogue"
Tuesday: Spent 1-2 hours Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
The design of Beth Shalom Synagogue reflects Frank Lloyd Wright's legacy of making every building he designed "one of a kind" with surprising, and at times, startling, features. Our experience there was enhanced by the skilled tour guide who could point out details of Wright's and Rabbi Cohen's vision that we otherwise would have missed. One could almost sense the presence of the architect and the rabbi in the sanctuary because evidence of their love for God and beauty was so tangible. There were 4 of us on the tour- two Jews and two Christians. All of us enjoyed the experience equally. The film that was shown before our tour gave us insight into the brilliance of the Rabbi (Mortimer Cohen) who was tenacious in recruiting Wright for the project. The film's narrator read letters the two men exchanged over the years of planning, drawing ever more closely into a relationship of mutual affection, respect, and creativity. See more..
- 5.0 Potter County Stargazing Tours (96 reviews)
-Great experience!
Night Tours
Greg was such a nice guy. We signed up the day of the tour, and he called me worried about the cloud cover and asked if I wanted to move the date. Since we were only there that night, he agreed to give it a try. We got a personal viewing with him! He worked hard to show use the constellations between the clouds and stayed extra late for us when the clouds finally left. We had our kids with us (9 and 4 - the four year old fell asleep) But he worked hard to engage my 9 year old, giving him solar system size demonstrations with balls, having him guess galaxy names that we saw through the telescope, etc. Overall it was a wonderful experience for the whole family! DOn't miss this if you are visiting to star gaze. See more..

Historic Sites • Monuments & Statues
I spent hundreds of hours studying the battle and intentionally waited to the last hours of my last day there to visit the Copse of Trees and The Angle. It is a must that you know all about the battle before visiting Gettysburg - then this final visit will feel almost etherial. See more..

At Galen Glen, we farm wine. Ancient glacial soils atop millions of years old sea fossils form our topography. The land was patiently waiting for us, yielding only scrawny crops for our ancestors. Our wines reflect a delicate tension of acid and ripeness, punctuated by a powerful sense of location. See more..

You can't believe how much exists relating to the Three Stooges. Everything is superbly displayed with even a few interactive machines to test your Stooge trivia knowledge. My wife who is not a Stooge fan enjoyed viewing the collection on its three levels and sitting in the continuously playing Stooge shorts theater. -Outstanding Historical Museum
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM History Museums
We were in town for the IceFest and while in the visitor's center discovered it was located thru a courtyard out the back door of the center. It was free to enter and had 2 floors of wonderful Cumberland County history to explore. The Carlisle area has so much early American history, but we were stunned at how extensive and comprehensive the museum was. They took you on a time travel from the early founding's to the late 20th century. We loved the early American sections and the Indian School/Jim Thorpe reintroduction. There were wonderful maps, diagrams, and beautiful historic furniture and we can't say enough about how wonderful the staff was. This is the type of resource you expect at a larger metropolis. Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Theaters
The Erie Playhouse always produces an enjoyable and wonderful performance. The current offering in Feb & Mar 2020, Gaslight, is one of the best plays I've seen there. Cast did an outstanding job! Especially, Amanda Hurd, who is on stage at least 95% of the play. The set was very well done. The lighting staff did a great job especially since lighting was an integral part of the show. The playhouse itself is comfortable and easy to get to. The productions are always enjoyable. See more..

-Wonderful visit to an historic theater in a quaint town
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Movie Theaters
This was my wife’s and my first visit to Dietrich Theater. The theater is a comfortable mix of vintage and modern. The edifice is historic, but the interior of the theaters is outfitted with the most modern and comfortable seating. The prices were reasonable and the people were so friendly! Further, we felt safe the way the theater followed CDC and state guidelines for health and safety. Nestled in a quaint small town where you can walk to cafes and specialty stores, a visit here becomes part of a wonderful day. We highly recommend visiting. See more..

Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
An absolute must see for any Ali fan or boxing fan in general. To call this place beautiful is an understatement. Mike Madden and his team have gone above and beyond restoring the cabins and the grounds to recreate the perfect original experience. Mick is a gracious host and is so knowledgeable about all aspects and details of the camp. He knows the history and story behind every building and artifact. Everything is hands on- and accessible to visitors. There are interactive videos throughout the camp showing footage of Ali that pertain to those specific areas of the camp. These videos bring you back to the 1970's and let you see the camp exactly how it was when Ali was there. I can't say enough about my amazing visit to Fighter's Haven and I recommend every boxing fan or Ali fan visit this place at LEAST once in their lifetime. - 5.0 Tour-Ed Coal Mine (55 reviews)
-Experience A Real Coal Mine
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Mines
This was the 'real deal'! As far as tours go, this was educational, informative and so interesting, not in the least because the tours are led by guys who've worked the coal mines and truly understand what they are talking about. They have lived it! Start with an informative video, then a bit of history and prep, then squat down and in you go, ride a real coal car deep into the mine; just a little taste of what it must have felt like. There is a great effort to be educational and factual. In the tunnels are displays of various equipment, from the 1800's up to more current equipment. And of course the tour guide sharing some personal experiences, which makes it so real. Being a city dweller this was an eye-opener about the challenges, hard life, safety issues these men have experienced. And it is still very hard work. See more..

- 5.0 Allegheny River Trail (51 reviews)
-Unreal!
Hiking Trails
We travel all over the country biking on rail to trails. This one is the best. It blows Utah and Colorado away! Tunnels, bridges, eagles, deer, and tons of other wildlife abound. The history of the area is a bonus. Only downside: Middle-aged (like me) guys dressed in Lance Armstrong costumes who think they are on the Tour de France. These losers travel in packs, at high speeds, and yell, grunt, and complain if you don't stop and let them by. We bid a lot, and this is the only place we've run into this. It's not a wide path, but these glory day reenactors think they own that. Nevertheless, even with these losers, the path is still the best I've encountered. We've been on it at least 5 times this year, and we have to drive 2 hours to get there. See more..

- 5.0 Renfrew Museum and Park (50 reviews)
-Beautiful grounds and Federal architecture
Tuesday: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
Renfrew became a public museum and park in 1975 through the generosity of its last private owner, Emma Geiser Nicodemus, and her sister, Hazel Geiser. In her will Emma Nicodemus specified that her house and the surrounding 107-acres, willed to the Borough of Waynesboro, be made into a museum and parkland. Mrs. Nicodemus wanted the facility to be called Renfrew in remembrance of two young sisters by that name. According to local legend, the girls met their demise in 1764 on what is now Park property. More than a quarter of a century after its creation, Renfrew has grown by leaps and bounds. Research and restoration have expanded the scope of the site to include a Visitors Center in the Victorian period barn, several restored outbuildings which include the smokehouse, milkhouse, and the Fahnestock farmstead with its barn and house. We have designated all the important Royer farmstead sites with bronze markers set in field stone. See more..
