On a very busy Saturday, it was crowded and there was a wait list to be seated. Outside seating only offered wines by the glass and inside was wine tasting. We opted for outside and luckily had a table with umbrella on this warm sunshine day. Other outside seating were couches and chairs or picnic tables. Sitting outside we enjoyed their Chardonnay, Late Harvest Riesling and Roso Red wine. It was relaxing looking out over vineyards and the Bay even with the crowds. We were concluding our winery tour around Leelanau and the Old Mission Peninsula and decided to stop at Leelanau Cellars-and I'm glad we did. I have had some of their wines before found at Meijer. They offered reasonable tastings of $5 for five tastings. They had a large variety of wines to choose from, dry and sweet. They also allowed tasting of their Farm Fresh Wines and fruit wines. We fell in love with so many and ended up coming home with 6 bottles-very reasonably priced $8-24! They also had different cans of wine and bubbly fruit Moscato wine in cans to buy, which can't be found at other locations other than their winery. We did not have a reservation for tasting, but only waited less than 10 minutes to get a tasting. The service was also very quick and educational. They give you a small sample of 10 wines. They have all kinds, for all tastes. We ended up buying 3 bottles plus the spice mix for the yummy cheese dip that is served about 2/3 through your tasting. We were on a road trip in Michigan and chose Shady Lane Cellars as my wine tasting experience. I was not disappointed. What a wonderful choice for wine tasting. The outdoor patio atmosphere of the wine tasting combined with the friendly and knowledgeable staff made our short time a rewarding experience. The wines were excellent and I brought 2 bottles home with me. My husband was my designated driver and he was able to have a glass of apple cider while I had my wine tasting. It was a win-win. We visited the winery yesterday and could not have been more pleased. Considering that Traverse City area establishments are struggling with low staff, the Manager, Chris, and our server made sure our visit was relaxed and enjoyable. They do their absolute best to accommodate visitors; the website reflects that reservations are recommended and they will take walk ins depending on how busy they are. Have been there several times and watched all the staff keep lots of balls in the air. The wine is delish and who could not enjoy a glass while looking at the vineyard and gorgeous view (anytime of year). Bluestone produces some of the best red wine in Michigan. Tony Peterson the owner is always such a great host! We have been driving across state to get their wines for a few years now after "Discovering" them on a trip to Warren Dunes. We usually purchase a case of wine each visit as they are not available anywhere else in the state. We have enjoyed each flavor we have tried and this time we stocked up on their cherry wine, which was better than any of the Traverse City cherry wines we have had. Our host Karen was wonderful. The owner was on standby and made us feel like valued guests. The concept of Sugar Maple based wine is truly great in practice and these guys blow it away. Our family got there on a very rainy Northern MI day and were immediately welcomed and made to feel at home even though they were at capacity busy. A quick 5 minutes later we were tabled in the warehouse and Karen got to work introducing us to the concept of Sugar Maple wine and Cider. The kids got maple based root beer (which we all loved). In a sentence: it's different but in a very good way. There's a reason we all love Maple Syrup - this translates well into wine and cider - even for those of us who don't care for sweet wines/cider.
