    - A Great Way to Experience Detroit!
    Piers & Boardwalks
    Detroit RiverFront image
After years of hearing how dirty and dangerous Detroit was, I was a little apprehensive about visiting, but knew that I wanted to experience the Motor City. I was completely surprised at how clean and safe the River Walk area and the downtown in general was. Detroit is a great city that is experiencing a renaissance (GM Renaissance Building pun not included) and I thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The Riverwalk is about 3 miles long and there is a nice, easy access parking lot at the corner of Rivard and Atwater Streets. The views of the Detroit River and Windsor, Canada are incredible. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area. See more..
  2. 4.5 Grand Haven Lighthouse and Pier (651 reviews)
    - Great Sunset
    Piers & Boardwalks • Lighthouses
Grand Haven Lighthouse and Pier image
This is a great place to walk the pier and watch the sunset, even on a cold fall day. I suppose that could be said of any lighthouse/beach on the Michigan side of Lake Michigan, but it holds true here. Right now the lake water level is high, so be prepared to get your feet wet if you go to the far side of the outer light. We parked for free, but I doubt you could during the peak tourist season. Pretty views on the River. Stopped in a pub overlooking the water. Nice day to enjoy now that things are opening up. Very relaxing scenic area, was winter so cold but we come here often when traveling north. Summer has boats using the causeway and it’s cool to see the bridge lift to let the taller ships thru. 4. 3.5 Luna Pier Boardwalk (50 reviews)
    - THE thing to do in Luna Pier
    Spent < 1 hour Piers & Boardwalks
    Luna Pier Boardwalk image
Wanted a nice place to visit on Lake Erie. Luna Pier is small, with a few restaurants and this beach. Parking is available but fills up fast on weekends and holidays. If you park where there is paid parking it is 4.00 an hour or gets a little cheaper the longer you stay. You will get a ticket if you dont pay to park. There is a nice little beach and the boardwalk which are both pretty small but if you’re from around here, there probably isn’t much else to do. People of all ages were here. We stayed about an hour and moved on but it’s a nice spot to get in Lake Erie. See more..

  6. 4.5 Lexington State Harbor (39 reviews)
    - Decent Beach

Growing up near here, I came to this beach numerous times as a child. It's always fun to walk on the boardwalk. When I came back here for the weekend and my husband told me he needed to burn off his covid-15, I took him for a stroll here. We went here early in the morning to avoid any crowds. The water was way too cold for any swimming. There is plenty of parking spots. They have a playground and picnic tables. The beach is rather small, in my opinion, for the number of people that come to it. See more..

I pulled up to the stop sign in my little car and was just going to walk out to the beach and get some Lake Huron photos. I pulled up to the stop sign and had my 3 dollars out and the guy in the chair who appeared to be working and just stared at me. After a minute or so of just sitting there, someone walked up to him and asked about ice or something and he helped them, as I just sat in my car. I just drove in and parked. I kept my $3 since they didn't seem to want it. The beach area was cool. There was tall grasses in the water that were great for the foreground of my pictures and a few kayakers out that added a little action to some of the pictures. Nice beach. Odd people running it. Strange vibe. See more..
  10. 5.0 Chester Street Park (2 reviews)
    - Hidden gem- small parking area near private driveways
Piers & Boardwalks • Scenic Walking Areas
    Chester Street Park image
This narrow park is located on the south side of the Penwater Channel. You must drive several miles around Pentwater Lake to reach this location, but worth the trip. There are restrooms at the entrance on the left. As you walk long the boardwalk, there are a couple information signs about the area. Continue on towards the channel. We saw many people fishing from the boardwalk. The boardwalk leads you to full access to the South Pier walkway and a great sunset view. Benches along the walkway. The opposite side of the channel has a beach and many people. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing time, then this side is where you want to be. Small parking area located near private driveways. There are signs posted where Private property is located. See more..
  11. 5.0 Draper-Houston Meadows Preserve (1 review)
    - A nice place to wander around
Spent 1-2 hours Piers & Boardwalks • Bridges • Scenic Walking Areas
I've been out here three times to check it out as a walking place for our walking club. There are several interconnected trails which go through the woods and fields. The trail crosses a metal bridge and there are a few boardwalks too. Small hills are easily walkable. Strollers and wagons will have difficulty in places. Can be wet after rains and Spring thaw.
