Fort George National Historic Site of Canada image
it was a rainy day in May 2022 when we visited, carrying umbrellas. It is clear that the site management and animators enjoyed their work and intended to provide a fulfilling experience. Our son was happy to watch the black powder drill (twice!). We explored the entire fort in about 2-3 hrs, if I recall correctly, reading the sign boards and talking with the animators. Good discussion in the kitchen, and rolling the powder cartridge papers; the rifleman answered all questions and the officer spoke knowledgeably about the battle history. All of the animators, actually, were happy to chat and answer, regardless that they were normally standing in the rain, kudos! (I think it was May 22/22, but will edit as necessary...) See more..

Discovery Harbour traces its roots back to the original British naval and military base in Penetanguishene, built to safeguard access to Upper Canada after the War of 1812. By 1820, it was home to over 70 people, including sailors, officers, shipwrights, and soldiers. Five large ships, 15 smaller vessels, and numerous workshops and dwellings were built. In 1828, a British garrison on Drummond Island was relocated to Penetanguishene. By 1834, Canada was defended exclusively by these forces. An impressive stone Officers' Quarters was built in 1845. Rideau Canal - Jones Falls Defensible Lockmasters House image
Just a 45 minute drive from the waterfront in Kingston we went there on a dreary cold an miserable day. What a surprise because the location was absolutely charming. First we viewed the locks and there was a houseboat and day cruiser waiting. It took 20 + minutes for the lock to fill so the boats could pass through to the next lock. There is a 3 rd lock but we didn't go there as it was seperated by a beautiful small bay. There were a number of kayakers and 2 beautiful wooden boats that was tied up next to the hotel. Hotel Kenny has been there 138 years and is absolutely charming. We went in for lunch and saw served a warm pea and mint soup, a main and our choice of a number of home made deserts, all for under $20...what a deal. There are picnic tables, nice landscaping and a snack bar in a seperate building. Had the weather been nice we would have had a terrific picnic there. I'd definitely recommend you spend the time and enjoy this lovely spot. See more..

The light stands 87 feet from the base of the tower. The lighthouse was acquired by Parks Canada in 1967 to commemorate the vital role of lighthouses in navigation on the Great Lakes. This museum is top notch. I had wanted to go for quite a while, ever since I heard that Josiah Henson was the inspiration for the Stowe novel, and once I told my 96yo mom, she wanted to go as well. We weren't disappointed. It was a long drive for mom from Burlington, so we stayed overnight in Chatham (disappointment), but we were thrilled with the museum and it was well worth the trip. What a courageous man he was, and a visionary. You don't have to be African-American/Canadian to appreciate this place! See more..

    Hutchison House Museum image
Whilst staying with relatives we decided to visit Hutchinson House Museum. It is a wonderful example of how life evolved at the turn of the 19th century. The web site is full of useful information and our visit was enhanced by our volunteer guide Bob. Be aware that this house is built over three storeys and therefore some people may have difficulty with the stairs which are quite steep. It was a very interesting and enjoyable visit.
