This was our second visit since 12 years ago….more sculpture additions from the eclectic to honouring Sur Sanford Fleming with a larger than life survey transit… a number of displays could use numbered marker identification signage to match them up with the paper map we picked up at the downtown Tourism office…. It was a very enjoyable afternoon stroll thru the woods ending with a mother deer and 2 fawns strolling down the street into the parking lot…. Nature all around!!! See more..

What a gem! There are lots of interconnected trails of varying lengths and difficulties to enjoy. The area offers a variety of scenery from lakes to rugged bedrock outcrops. The main paths are mostly level ground which makes them easy for casual hikers to enjoy. The trails can be accessed from a variety of entry points around central North Bay. Wildlife is in abundance: squirrels, birds, chipmunks, etc. I was also lucky enough to catch a family of beavers going about their daily routine. See more..

    Burgoyne Woods Park image
Burgoyne Woods was named after a very prominent family in the area, the Burgoyne Family. They owned the local newspaper (St. Catharines Standard) for many years. Its a good sized park and is host to childrens day camp programs during the summer. There are pavilions for use if it's raining. There is a great pool with life guards, lots of space for picnics and a huge off-leash area for dogs. You can explore the woods. There is a creek that cuts through the property and has some bridges. Watch out for the Humane Society as they often patrol for off-leash dogs in the park and check for licence tags. See more..

The area along the trails are wide open and great for off trail walk. During our visit, the leaves covered the whole area. Simply beautiful. Interestingly, we got off the trails multiple times and had to hiked through some steep area to get back on course. Great walk, will come back in different season. P.S. Parking off 19th road is small and bit danger - we were there before 9 and it had 1 spot left. highly recommended to park from other entrance spots. See more..

    - Perfect for Snowshoeing! And FREE!

Glen Major Forest & Walker Woods image
We were there on Sun. March 1st and very lucky that we had some fresh snow. There was plenty of free parking at the East Duffins Headwaters parking lot (see photo) and lots of trail signs. The trails here are not so heavily used as they are in the Rouge park, so it was nice for us to still have some powder so our snowshoes were actually useful. (As opposed to a packed down trail.) The trails have lots of loops so you can customized your route according to how long you want to be out. We were there for just under 2 hours and it was perfect. What an amazing place for FREE! Good 3.5km hike with some up & downs through cedar forest and hardwood on upper parts. Dog owners DO NOT follow request to leash dogs but let them run wild. A 5 and 1 for pet owners. A lot of people don’t want a charging dog running at them on a trail, inconsiderate people! See more..

    Proctor Park Conservation Area image
Proctor Park takes its name from Proctor house. This used to belong to a weathly shipping family and he could see the Brighton harbour from the widowswalk in the house. The house is now restored and used as a museum. The property is some 90 acres with multiple trails ranging from easy to difficult with a creek running through it. This is an ideal area to hold a retreat, a picnic or simply decompress on the trails. 5 minutes from downtown Brighton and 20 minutes from Trenton it is in an ideal location. Cross Country Ski meets used to be held here when I went to school in Brighton. The house was just started to be renovated. I am impressed with how things have turned out over the years and my compliments how the Lower Trent Conservation Authority is maintaining the property.! I visit frequently as this park is located only about a fifteen minute drive from my house. See more..

    - Decent snowshoe trails.

    Copeland Forest image
I come here with my boxer Lenny during the snowfall months to kill his energy and get some decent snowshoeing in. The trails themselves are quite easy, you run into virtually no obstacles or elevation change. The network is small and at some points links up to horseshoe valley. You can spend a few hours here and never snowshoe the same trail. Great spot for short walks during the warmer months. TIPS: Hunting is permitted here so be aware of hunting seasons. There are also trap lines in Copeland. Parking on the side of the road in the winter can land you a ticket (parking lot is not plowed). Please pick up your trash, including dog bags! See more..

    Purdon Conservation Area image
A place not to be missed especially when the Showy Lady's Slipper Orchids are in bloom (last two weeks of June). A short (several hundred metres) accessible path circles the orchid colony, Excellent interpretative signage. One pit toilet. A second longer trail of 1.5 km takes you through various forest types - also well signed - but is not wheel-chair accessible. This is reported as Canada's largest colony of this type of orchid. It should be on the bucket list of everyone interested in wildflowers. Requested donation. See more..

These back country sites are similar to the provincial sites, with kybo and fire pit. Some sites have basic wood benches by the fire. Some lakes (like Red Pine) have cottages that are away from the camping areas. These sites are very easy to access without a portage but the obvious trade off is occasional motor boat traffic in these areas. There are quite a few trails for day hikes. See more..
  18. 5.0 Naftel's Creek Conservation Area (8 reviews)
    - walking trails
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails • Forests
We live in the area and having been hiking Naftels Creek trails for 25 years. We started with a 2 year, 4, and 7 year old and used the short trails. As they grew up, we could go for the longer trails. We continue to go as a family at aThanksgiving and Easter.. When the kids were young, we often took their friends and tree climbing, spotting fish in the fiver, seeing deer tracks, checking out the ducks and walking with the dog were all enjoyable. Great place to be active and see nature See more..

    Snowdon Park Preserve image
Snowdon Park Preserve is still a hidden gem - and it's trails (one is about 45 minutes (Brenda Chambers Trail) and the other is about 2.5 hours (Ross Rigney Trail) are flat, very buggy in spring/summer, can be wet/muddy, mostly unexposed - hat not needed. They are beautiful in fall and winter - I've hiked them many times. Fall is not only gorgeous for colour - but also the forest understory of mushrooms. Wanted to let you know that the trail signage has been improved and there are now 2 portalet bathrooms not far from the entrance kiosk. Also wanted to give you some photos so you know what you can expect in fall. Did this help you - I'd like to know See more..

    - Good Place To Walk Your Dog
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Forests
Durham East Cross Forest Conservation Area image
We visited the Durham Forest Conservation Area last week to walk our husky - as we love to visit different parks in Ontario once a week for some fresh air. It's a very large conservation. We walked aimlessly for two hours. There is lots of change in terrain which was nice. Lots of hills, rocky paths, and grass patches. We went on a very warm day and didn't encounter any bugs, gnats, or flies. We did, however, encounter some wildlife - a bunch of chipmunks throughout the trail. It's a beautiful forest area, but there isn't anything super special from what we experienced on our walk. We didn't encounter any water sources (pond/lake/creek) and didn't see any online on their map, so make sure you bring water for yourself and your dog.If you're just looking for a nice place with lots of nature to walk your dog - with no specific attraction to view - this place is perfect! 22. 3.5 Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area (5 reviews)
    - A Reminder of Northern Ontario’s Trees
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails • Forests
    Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area image
It was interesting when I approached the Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area. I was the only one there. It had but one path, that was mostly under grass or plants. The trees reminded me of Northern Ontario. There were also a lot of insects and mud on the way, but that was adventure. By the way, under the peat material lives sphagnum moss and other interesting swamp plants growing on the top. That certainly was unique to me. Eventually I had to cross some water. They had laid a lot of planks for me to get over. I continued my trek, but all of a sudden I was surrounded by more mud than ever and because of the proximity of water, insects seemed to come out from nowhere. I retreated. It was an interesting trek, no doubt about it! See more..

Dan Patterson conservation area has a covered picnic area , spot for a bbqs and small playground area. There are washrooms open during summer. They have a nice trail system to enjoy for a scenic walk. Part of the trail runs along the creek and is very scenic in the fall. There is a viewing platform by the wetlands which the trails circle around. There are signs for cross country skiing. Worth a walk in the trail system. See more..
  24. 4.5 Palgrave Forest and Wildlife Area (5 reviews)
    - Trails for the biker and hiker

Palgrave Forest and Wildlife Area image
Lovely trails to walk every season. Winter can sometimes get a little slippery with the ice, the horses mess up the cross country trails. The owners of the horses will leave you presents from the horses in the middle of the trails as well. Spring time can be a little mucky; but hey it is the outdoors. No cost the trails are free for bikes and hikes. The sign off Hwy #50 in the parking lot at the beginning of the trail sometimes has maps of the trails (free) also off of Duffy's Lane there are maps available as well. Would definitely recommend a walk in the Palgrave Forest as our family calls it. Another nice (very short) walk would be on Hwy#50 across from the pond is the Mill Pond trail. See more..

  28. 5.0 Happy Valley Forest (1 review)
    - Hiked the Goldie Feldman Nature Reserve.
    Forests
The Happy Valley Forest is the largest (298 hectares) remaining intact forest of its kind on the Oak Ridges Moraine. It has been managed for many years by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) whose goal is to protect old-growth forests and the many species that depend on this habitat. One prominent, albeit short, moderate trail in the forest is the 2.5 km Goldie Feldman Nature Trail. Here you'll see the older, mature forest and some colourful recent growth. There are also the headwater streams of Lakes Simcoe and Ontario as well as a look point, a short boardwalk and natural rest stops if needed. Signs are prominent. Watch out for the various species - NCC says that deer, coyote, hawks have been seen on this hike. All I know is, we heard and saw many birds and a lizard/salamander zipping across ourpath....
