  1. 4.5 Flattop Mountain Trail (945 reviews)
    - It’s Only Flat on the Top
    Hiking Trails
    Flattop Mountain Trail image
This is a very popular hiking trail for couples, families, and pets. About 1/4 mile above the parking lot, you’ll come to a fork in the Blueberry Loop trail; taking the left fork is the easier path to begin your ascent and has mountain and valley views. The right fork is steeper and longer and affords city and coastal views that you will experience at higher elevations after exiting the loop trail. The trail to the top becomes more difficult negotiating the staircases to reach the Saddle, which provides great 360-degree views on a clear day. The last 1/4 mile to the top gains about 1000 feet in elevation in a slow brutal scramble over loose rocks through crevices on a poorly marked trail if you’re determined to make it to the flagpole at the top. It’s easy hiking around the “martian” surface at the top. It took us about two hours to reach the top and one-hour to hike down with rests. Expect sore muscles and joints if you’re older or out of shape. See more..

  6. 4.5 Byron Glacier Trail (278 reviews)
    - Hidden treasure at the end of the trail
    Hiking Trails
    Byron Glacier Trail image
Easy trail the has a great reward at the end of it. If you aren’t very outdoorsy or not sure on how to navigate in the wild, it won’t matter because this trail is very easy to navigate. Just be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and bring the usual necessities such as water/ snacks etc. We went in November and were really glad we brought the shoe spikes. Once you get to the trail end, just follow the valley as it bends to the left and you will literally walk into the glacial ice caves. Not a bad way to spend a morning. One of the best hikes we had on our trip, definitely recommend that you make this part of your itinerary. See more..
  7. 4.5 Savage River Loop Trail (224 reviews)
    - Great Hike
    Hiking Trails
    Savage River Loop Trail image
Probably my favorite hike (out of the ones we did) in Denali. We didn't do the Healy overlook because we were still sore from another hike a few days prior, and the reviews on that showed it was a really tough hike. The Savage river loop is at Mile 15. You can take the park's busses (free) to be dropped off or if you have your own car. We had a car so we drove down. Lots of security down there, as it's the last stop before you go into wilderness so they want eveyone to be safe. The loop is in a valley, no views of Denali, but still a great hike. Don't think it's too strenous, if you don't want it to be. People were walking around and up hills, etc so you can wander around into the wilderness. Beware of wildlife of course. It was a bit windy since we were in the valley so I had my rain jacket (it was also raining while we were there) and some ear muffs. The gloves came in handy too! Really enjoyed the views, and the sound of water See more..
  8. 5.0 Harding Ice Field Trail (198 reviews)
    - Great hiking experience in rain
    Hiking Trails
    Harding Ice Field Trail image
We were worried about the hiking plan on 7/7/2022 due to the rain forecast (98-99%) the whole day. Finally we decided to take a shot. It turned out that the hiking experience was amazing. First, the rain was not heavy, mostly drizzling. My jeans was not soaked. Most of the hiking was in the woods which reduced the wetness significantly. The raining was constant during the hiking but it didn’t bother at all. Secondly, the hiking was not tiresome due to the cool weather. Last but not least, mosquitoes were at rest in the rain weather so the whole hiking was bug free. We were so happy to take this chance. If anyone is worrying about the rain in this hiking trail please sit back and relax. Raining day (if not too heavy) is the best friend for this hiking experience. We walked to the cliffs (the second stop of the trail) and the view was absolutely amazing. You don’t want to miss it! See more..

    Horseshoe Lake Trail image
We arrived at Denali late on a beautiful June afternoon and wanted to squeeze in a quick hike. Horseshoe Lake Trail was a lovely introduction to the park. The view from the top of the hill before you descend the steps toward the lake is stunning. We loved seeing the beaver dam and getting to walk along the Nenana river. It wasn't all that crowded when we hiked, and it was a great way to spend an hour or two. See more..
  11. 4.5 Lower Dewey Lake Hiking Trail (171 reviews)
    - Not for the Faint of Heart
    Hiking Trails
Lower Dewey Lake Hiking Trail image
Short but straight up the hill at times, I had to pause for a minute or two to catch my breath and I think I"m in pretty good shape for a 55 y/o. Provides scenic views of Skagway and the Cruise Ships, but mostly a walk in the woods, until you get to the glistening Lower Dewy lake. Beautiful. Had no intentions (or time) to keep going to Upper Dewey lake, but I can only imagine the views from there must have been real good and worth the struggle to climb. Not a hike for young kids, unless you don't mind piggy backing them at times. See more..
  12. 4.5 Bodenburg Butte (139 reviews)

This is a relatively easy hike which includes climbing 505 stairs if you use a more civilized West loop. 360 Mat-Su valley views definitely worth the effort. If you have a binocular, you can even see the Knik glacier. There is a standard 5-dollar fee for parking at the National Park area. See more..
  13. 5.0 Perseverance National Recreation Trail (124 reviews)
    - My Walk to the Trail Head
    Hiking Trails
    Perseverance National Recreation Trail image
I had some time before heading to the airport after my cruise ended, so I decided to explore this trail. It was a beautiful way to end my vacation! I started at the harbor and walked to the trail head from there, buying a few gifts at the shops in town- and realized I'd walked enough! Eve the walk there was beautiful and peaceful with the occasional locals, either walking or driving but politely sharing the road. It was interesting to get close to where the streams coming down from high in the mountains formed a roaring river. The size of the boulders left by receding glaciers was truly impressive. I wish I could have gone more into the woods but bears live there and we'd been told on the cruise that it was safer to hike in groups. Still a spectacular walk. See more..
  14. 4.5 Deer Mountain Trail (110 reviews)
    - Check out my pictures; it was a great day!
    Hiking Trails
    Deer Mountain Trail image
I hiked this trail on June 24, 2013. We arrived in Ketchikan on a cruise ship and I wanted something active to do. I asked in the Tourist Information Center and they suggested this hike. I am more than happy that I went. I took a taxi from the pier to the beginning of the trail. This only cost me $8.00 and was worth it since I did not waste the time walking through the town just to get the trail head. It took me about two hours to hike to the second overlook and more than an hour to hike down and back to the pier . (I am in average shape, so if you are fit you will be able to do this in a shorter time.) The final part of the trail had snow on it, so I did not venture to the summit. This was one of the best things that I did on my Alaskan cruise. It was a clear day with plenty of sunshine in Ketchikan. The views were awesome. See more..

    - Lovely hike with gorgeous views
    Hiking Trails
    Angel Rocks Trail image
If you don’t want to deal with a trail full of tourists, I definitely recommend going early in the day and during the week. The trail was well marked with some nice off shoots for getting sweep valley views. It’s a pretty rough trek up, better for people at least moderately in shape or who can take it slow. I saw plenty of birds and red squirrels. Sadly, no bear or moose. See more..
  16. 4.5 Yakutania Point (95 reviews)
    - Beautiful hike to get a little way away from town
    Hiking Trails
    Yakutania Point image
We were in town with a cruise ship and did a morning excursion but still had some time afterward before we left. We filled it with this beautiful hike out to Yakutania Point. It was fairly easy and not too hilly, with some forest views along the way and a beautiful rocky beach at the end. It took us less than an hour to walk out, enjoy the views, soak up the sun, and take a few pictures, and then head back across the bridge to town. From there it was 15 or 20 minutes across town back to where our ship was docked. Definitely worth a short hike to get some Alaskan scenery if you're in Skagway! See more..
  17. 5.0 Savage Alpine Trail (84 reviews)
    - Great Hike In Denali
    Hiking Trails
    Savage Alpine Trail image
Hiked the trail starting from the Mountain Vista trailhead. It was a great hike. The hike is 100% uphill and then 100% downhill. The Savage River end of the trail is steep. The top of the hike was windy and chilly on the day we hiked. We had a picnic at the top. The day was overcast, so we did not see Denali from the top. The vista was beautiful nonetheless! See more..
  18. 4.5 Ketchikan Rainbird Trail (76 reviews)
    - Beautiful Trail
    Hiking Trails
    Ketchikan Rainbird Trail image
If you like to hike and want to get away from the Cruise ship tourists I highly recommend hiking the Rainbird Trail. It is a lush Rainforest path; easy to traverse with some beautiful views. We opted to take a cab from our dock to the trailhead at the college and then hike back. Our cab driver gave us great advice which I will share for free. Don't take the first set of stairs down but hike on to the second staircase. That will take you down to the street and then walk back toward town. You can stop at the lovely Ketchikan Library and enjoy free Wi Fi and more beautiful views. It is a steep but downhill walk back to the cruise docks. See more..
  19. 5.0 Upper Dewey Lake (64 reviews)

    Upper Dewey Lake image
Crazy experience, did it solo when i was 15 (my grandma stayed in skagway). Incredible scenery and made some friends along the way. I was not prepared (no trekking shoes or poles), and it took around 6 hours. Views at the top are incredible, other than the lake there is a big patch of red/orange/brown grass that is straight out of a painting. Saw one black bear and what looked like wolves footprints. Review is from August 2014!! See more..
  20. 4.5 Two Lakes Park (43 reviews)
    - Hidden gem, beautiful mile-long loop hike in center of Seward
Bodies of Water • Parks • Hiking Trails
    Two Lakes Park image
This was such a nice surprise during our visit to Seward. The Two Lakes hike is a loop trail which goes around 2 lakes and offers views of 2 waterfalls. The trail is well defined, but has many tree roots and rocks to navigate. The elevation change is minimal and easily managed by my 61-year-old knees. The trail winds through a lush forest which is strewn with occasional intriguing artifacts - perhaps from the 1964 tsunami? There are 2 parking areas; one at the north end and one at the south end, each with picnic tables overlooking the lake (but with no restrooms). This is a great activity for families or adults with a bit of time to enjoy being outdoors in Seward. Highly recommend. See more..

LOVED this trail--just gorgeous! The parking lot was crowded, but we managed to find a spot. We did not have time to walk all around Beaver Lake, so I will have to try another day. We sat at the lake and enjoyed our lunch before heading back to the Herring Cove Trailhead parking area. See more..

  24. 5.0 Harbor Mountain Trail (37 reviews)
    - Fun drive, tough hiking and amazing views
    Hiking Trails
    Harbor Mountain Trail image
To get to the trailhead you have to drive about six miles up Harbor Mt Road, just off Halibut Point Road. The road is a one lane gravel road with lots of switchbacks and tight turns. Drive slow and easy and you’ll be fine. The hike is 2.5 miles to a shelter, and is up and down, than up and down and than up one more time. The views are amazing on a clear day. When we went up the clouds rolled in, it started to drizzle and then the sun came out. Great hike, a bit more challenging than expected See more..
  25. 4.5 Mt Dewey Trail (36 reviews)
    - A beautiful 1.5 mile walk to the top of the mountain
    Hiking Trails
    Mt Dewey Trail image
This was a beautiful walk to the top of Mount Dewey. This was a trek that the naturalist John Muir did many many years ago. You walk on wood steps/ boardwalk of varying levels. This is a rainforest but you won’t get muddy on the hike up. Prepare to take a few rest stops as you climb up the switchbacks. Beautiful forest and view from the top. See more..
  26. 4.5 Triple Lakes Trail (35 reviews)
    - Long hike in Denali
Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
    Triple Lakes Trail image
Great if your looking for a longer trail in Denali. We started from the trailhead and walked all the way to the Ranger's station and back for a total of about 19 miles. You get to see three lakes and great views once you ascend the mountain. I would rate it as hard just because of the distance required to complete the trail there and back plus some steep climbs up the mountain. The views are well worth it. We didn't see much wildlife along the trail. The weather was great to do it in August. See more..
  27. 4.5 Tonsina Creek Trail (33 reviews)
    - Breathtaking

    Tonsina Creek Trail image
This place is breathtaking. We went in the early morning and felt we were the only humans around. Bald eagles flew overhead. Our boys skipped rocks and broke their own record due to the smoothness and shallowness of the water. This was definitely my favorite location in the Seward area. The trail was moderate. Not too challenging, and definitely worth the time. See more..
  28. 5.0 Root Glacier Trail (26 reviews)

    Root Glacier Trail image
It takes some time to drive to the park’s McCarthy/Kennecot’s area, but it’s totally worth it. The Root Glacier day hike is very accessible, doable with kids, but fun as well. Trail goes through the old town, forest, rocks and ends up on the glacier. See more..
  29. 4.5 Heart Lake Trail (24 reviews)
    - Sitka Bike and Hike Fun!
    Hiking Trails
    Heart Lake Trail image
We did this Heart Lake Trail through Sitka Bike and Hike as an excursion offered by our Princess cruise. From downtown Sitka, it’s a 12min van ride to the bike pick up. Bikes were in terrific condition and we were offered helmets, rain parkas, and rain pants. Then we were riding along the ocean, and stopped at a steep staircase with beautiful views. The hike was through moss covered trees and we saw a lovely waterfall. We hiked past the gorgeous Thimbleberry Lake, and learned all things Alaska from our energetic great guides: Kyle and Mitchell. Even though it rained the entire 3 hours, it still was a fun experience. See more..
  30. 5.0 Battery Point Trail (22 reviews)
    - Well constructed and maintained
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
    Battery Point Trail image
We hiked this trail today. One of the best maintained trails we have hiked in Alaska. The forest areas are lovely with gravel on the trail. Some elevation changes may be a challenge for some, so don't be surprised. There are bridges over little creeks or large rocks placed aa stepping stones. We saw sea birds, porcupine, bear scat, scoters, winter wrens and many mushrooms. If you hike it with little children plan on carrying them part of the time. There are some benches for a rest if you find the trail tiring. Hike out to the beach and keep walking on the beach and you will get to Battery Point...close to the channel marker. No restrooms, no trash cans, no fresh water. Pack it in, pack it out! See more..
  31. 5.0 Portage Pass Trail (18 reviews)
    - Beautiful hike
    Hiking Trails
    Portage Pass Trail image
What a beautiful hike! The views from the top of Portage Pass are stunning, both looking forward towards Portage Glacier and looking back towards Whittier. We didn't go all the way to Portage Lake, but we did go about 15-20 minutes past the "Portage Pass Elevation 800'" sign to the overlook where you can see Portage Glacier spilling into Portage Lake. It's definitely worth going to that overlook. The entire hike took us 2 hours and 20 minutes (roundtrip), including plenty of stops for pictures. Bring some water as the first part of the hike up the mountain is pretty strenuous (but well worth it). We did this hike in the morning before catching the "26 Glacier Cruise" from Whittier in the afternoon-- it was a fantastic day. See more..
  32. 4.5 Horsetail Falls Trail (18 reviews)
    - Great hike and view above Whittier
Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails • Scenic Walking Areas
    Horsetail Falls Trail image
A beautiful hike to gorgeous views over Whittier and Passage Canal. As an avid Alaska hiker, I wouldn't call this an "easy hike" as I've seen on other reviews (you are climbing up most of the way), but I would say it is generally enjoyable for anyone in decent hiking condition. The first portion of the hike is much easier than after it turns uphill (and you are left to do a little bit of route-finding). In late July, we got to experience berry picking (both salmonberries and blueberries) and some up-close bear viewing (with a contented black bear munching on trail side blueberries). The planks make for a pretty easy time through through what could be wet conditions. As a previous comment stated, there is basically no signage on the trail. And it doesn't really need any ... there is one trail and you can't really get lost. Pretty much Alaska hiking. See more..
  33. 4.0 Pullen Creek Stream Walk (18 reviews)
    - Informative and leisurely trail
Bodies of Water • Hiking Trails
    Pullen Creek Stream Walk image
I came to know of the Pullen Creek Stream Walk in Skagway while waiting to get on the White Pass Summit Train ride at the train station near the ship docking area. Since I had quite some time before boarding the train, I decided to take a walk on the trail. My visit was the first week of June, much before the salmon started swimming. So, I did not see any salmon in the creek waters. There are frequent informative and colorful plaques along the walk providing local wildlife information. The walk follows Pullen Creek (sometimes called Dewey Creek) and is quite peaceful. There are a few road crossings along which require some caution. I certainly recommend this walk as it is very flat and can be leisurely. See more..

We loved this hike. We took the longer route which starts close to the main road, and meanders on flat ground for a ways before descending to the beach. You will want to have rubber boots, the mud is "fun." On the stoney beach we saw a few bald eagles, and a whale carcass. The walk back out is moderately steep but nothing extreme. Once we ascended to the flatter terrain, we walked on the gravel road back to our car. That road is passable with a sedan, a few large potholes to navigate See more..
  38. 4.5 Nabesna Road (10 reviews)
    - Off the beaten path
Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
    Nabesna Road image
Arriving at the ranger station on the Nabesna Road the very friendly park rangers will give you an abundance of information about the National Park and most importantly a CD you can pop into your player and listen to while driving along the road. It is like having a park ranger with you while you are driving. This road is not recommended for RV's or low lying cars. If you drive carefully you can make it to mile marker 28 on the road (the road is 42 miles to the end) At that point you have to cross the first off three streams and 4 wheel drive is highly recommended. We had an RV and turned around at mile marker 28. There is a great campground inside the park which is free. This road is not often used, because it is off the beaten path, but we loved it. We went on a hike at Caribou Creek trail to the public use cabin (use also free). And loved every minute of it. Next time we will be back with a 4 wheel drive See more..

Fantastic hiking trails, great things to see. wasn't crowded at all, it was like having the place to ourselves. Spotted a few Bald Eagles on the walk. Since we walked from town, the total distance was more like 12 miles than what our daughter said it would be, lol, but only towards the end of the hike near the waterfall was it really a tough climb. There were a few spots on the way that screamed for a polar plunge, and on the way back we stopped at the swimming hole with the rope swing and dove in. Coldest water I've ever been in, numbed me to the core, but after I got out, dried off and redressed, felt so invigorated! Gonna look into Cryotherapy when I return home. Of course, one can turn around at anytime and make it more of a workable distance, but the falls were totally worth the tired legs. See more..

As you drive out of Craig, keep an eye out for the unmarked parking lot on Highway 924. The start of the trail is new, wide and well maintained with strenuous switchbacks. Then there’s a set of new stairs to really get your heart pumping! The quick ascent allows for peek-a-boo views of Craig and the surrounding area. This trail is under construction and signs were posted not to proceed past a certain point due to unsafe bridges. We did venture past these signs, not far though as the path became unclear and it was raining and we thought it best to turn back. We did talk to a local on the way down and she said it’s fine going right to the top if you’re careful. The views would be spectacular on a clear day. See more..

This is a great way to get out and see the park and put some distance between you and the crowds. Drive down to Savage Creek and park you car (it's the farthest you can drive you own vehicle). My buddy and I hiked north along Savage creek for a mile or so, and then cut west, straight up the mountain slope. It was a bit of a slog up the slope, but lots of fun. Once you crest the top, you're good to go. We didn't really follow a trail, but it's hard to get lost out there as long as you keep your wits about you. Great day hike. We arrived in Kodiak by cruiseship. The ship docked directly below Pillar Mountain. The summit with its wind turbines looks deceptively low, but I knew that it stands at over 1200 ft.The hike up there offers the best viewpoint of Kodiak town and surroundings. The trail that I found starts after the Pillar Mountain Road makes a big right turn (a kind of parking space lies just below) and beyond a power utility line. It ends on top of the ridge from where an unpaved road leads to the highest point. I came up by a different trail that appears much less used. See more..

This part of our great Alaskan Wilderness has something to offer for every one. If your with older folks & kids you could go berry picking or the closes lake for fishing & a picknic. If your with your more out dorsey friends you could hike around & hit all three lakes. I know there is a boat at the first lake with ores no out board but you could always bring your own kicker & off you go, or just ore out it's fun. Jump in on a hot day & go swimming. Ether way your going to enjoy our out doors & wild life. See more..

The hike at the end of Nabesna road up to Rambler Mine was beautiful. Actually the trail it's self was ok but once at the mine the view was amazing and if you just walk a little further up to look out over the valley it is one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen. The trail is uphill and it's short but you gain elevation fast. The information from the National Park Visitor center was pretty accurate. I would very strongly suggest walking a little past the Mine to get the best view of both sides of the valley. We also saw Dall sheep at the top. See more..
