Byron Glacier Trail, Alaska, United States

4.5 (278 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Anchorage Hiking Trails

Hidden treasure at the end of the trail

Easy trail the has a great reward at the end of it. If you aren’t very outdoorsy or not sure on how to navigate in the wild, it won’t matter because this trail is very easy to navigate. Just be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and bring the usual necessities such as water/ snacks etc. We went in November and were really glad we brought the shoe spikes. Once you get to the trail end, just follow the valley as it bends to the left and you will literally walk into the glacial ice caves. Not a bad way to spend a morning. One of the best hikes we had on our trip, definitely recommend that you make this part of your itinerary.

Short easy trail with great reward.
The first time we arrived at this trailhead the rain was flying horizontally, so we drove to Whittier (through the tunnel for a couple of hours & returned to a drizzly but fantastic hike. You have the constant sound of the rushing river all the way till you see blue ice. Many small falls & streams were cascading down the nearby hills.

Easy to access - easy hike
Byron Glacier Trail is not too far off the highway and was easy to find. The trail is well marked and includes some infrastructure to keep the trail from erosion. It is a short hike and we could say we actually walked on a glacier. There were plenty of people on the trail and one family walked the trail with a baby stroller.
