We did glacier cruises, water rafting, hiking, bus tours, and glacier trekking in Alaska, and I want to say glacier trekking is the best. We got to step on the glacier, taste the ice, and drink the glacier water. We are a group of 14 people with young children and teens. Our guides, Kandel and Taylor, were very patient with us from the beginning to the end. They also provided educational information that the kids felt they were fascinating. We highly recommend MICA guides if you want something fun to do in Alaska. See more..

We had an amazing time in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park thanks to St. Elias Alpine Guides! They were professional, well-organized and friendly and made our trip a very fun and memorable experience . We enjoyed ice climbing, exploring ice caves, touring the abandoned copper mill, and an airplane trip to the backcountry with Wrangell Mountain Air. The park is truly a unique place and having experienced guides who are so passionate about what they do makes for a truly unforgettable (and safe!) experience. We would recommend this guiding company to anyone who wants to see the breathtaking beauty and cool history of this remote part of Alaska. See more..

From the moment our guide got in touch a few days before our tour we knew this would be an incredible experience. We did the three day Columbia glacier kayak + overnight lodge stay, and frankly it was the best money we've spent in Alaska in a long time (we visit yearly, so that says something!) The glacier was spectacular, and Tim (owner and our captain) did a great job of slowing on our ride to scope out wildlife. We saw jellyfish, otters, sea lions, and a curious harbor seal. Our guide, Kyle, was a perfect fit for us, and we felt he kept us engaged and moving but never drove us beyond our physical comfort zone (which for a trip that involved three days of kayaking, felt very mindful and attentive). But the real treat of this particular excursion was staying with Chris at his lodge. All hours of the day we could hike the area, eat blueberries and salmon berries right off the bushes, and watch otter pups frolicking in the shallows between leaping pink salmon. A black bear showed up right in the front yard (small and harmless, eating berries just like we were). It was a spectacular home base for kayaking (we saw seals and a TON of curious otters that came right up beside our kayaks if we stayed still, and a number of eagles), and Chris himself was a font of knowledge and entertainment, as well as a phenomenal cook - we ate better those two nights than most of our trip out to restaurants! Frankly I could rant and rave on, but book this trip! Seriously! See more..
  4. 5.0 McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters (263 reviews)
    - Family Rafting Trip

McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters image
We stayed for three nights at McCarthy. Since it was going to rain the third day we booked a trip with McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters. We chose the 4 hour lake and river rafting based on some very informative email interaction with Chris. The trip was really amazing. We had lots of fun and always failed safe despite some fun big waves on the river. Given our younger kids we had three tour guides: Ally, Sarah and Violet, with Ally being the lead guide. They all made the experience super fun for the whole family and our kids learned a lot about McCarthy and the glacier and had lots of laughs. They also have a pick up and drop off service and even the bus rides to and from the river were very fun and super enjoyable. I can highly recommend this tour for old and young ones. Thank you Ally, Sarah and Violet! See more..

Alaska Vista is very well run business, catering to all a client's needs. The team makes you feel like family. They picked us up at the airport, whisked us away to our glacier tour (which was fabulous), and dropped us off at our airbnb on the first day. The next day we meet the tour for the Anan bear viewing. Robert, our guide, is extremely knowledgeable about native and animal usage of plants, bear etiquette and allowed us to snap pics til our heart was content. And it was. He's a great photographer as well. Sylvia, our captain for both days was a kick, knowledgeable, gracious and kept us laughing. The two days we spent with Alaska Vista were the highlights of our trip. They even gave us a ride to the airport the next day. I can't recommend this group more. I will be giving out their card to everyone that I know. See more..

We did the full day rafting and gold panning adventure. And this was an ADVENTURE — the raft dropped us and a guide off on a little island where we hiked on a thickly wooded moose trail and forded a creek (they give you waders!) to get to the gold panning site. And this is no touristy little gold panning — it’s hard work and the real deal! Our guide, Mike, was so knowledgeable and fun. My kids (10, 12, and 14) had a blast. The river float was also beautiful, the scenery is unreal and our rafting guide Tom was so knowledgeable and patient. My one caveat would be that although the website makes this sound like a low-key outing, the gold panning portion is actually quite physically demanding, so I would not recommend it for very young kids or people who don’t have a basic level of physical fitness. That said, we are no backwoodsmen — just some regular suburbanites — and we had the time of our lives! See more..

My favorite part was truly the entire experience! Walking on Root Glacier was something that will stand out in my memories for the rest of my life! The weather was difficult, 40 degrees with a hard frigid driving rain but our guide expertly kept us safe and having tons of fun on the ice. I felt like the pace was perfect. I also enjoyed listening to her narration and actually understanding the glacier rather than just looking at the glacier! My guide even gave me a ride back to McCarthy when the tour was over! She didn’t have to do that! It was above and beyond her duties and I am grateful for her actions!! Overall, a splendid experience. I have been on tours all over the world. I have also been to 60 of the 63 US National Parks. This experience goes right to the very top in all of my life! Thank you! See more..

    - Canoe tour of Valdez Glacier Lake for a family of 5
Climbing Tours • Sightseeing Tours • Hiking & Camping Tours • Kayaking & Canoeing
    Alaska Guide Co image
We live near Anchorage and always wanted to see Valdez. We planned our trip around this canoe tour, as we had heard good things about the guide company. We chose the canoe tour because it was affordable for a family of 5 and our 3 boys didn’t want to spend a whole day on a guided tour. Joe was a great guide and allowed our boys to skip rocks on the lake and walk on some large chunks of glaciers. Joe was personable and accommodating. I also appreciated being in the canoe because it allowed me to take some great photos of the experience. Joe also took some photos of our family, which are great memories of our trip to Valdez. Would definitely recommend! See more..

    - Great time kayaking and fishing!

    NatVenture Tours image
Natalie was absolutely amazing! Chels and I had a great day fishing with her. She provided all the gear and had Chels on a fish within a few casts. Staying at the lodge at the park and being able to find a local guide in town was the best thing we could have done. Chels was so stoked to find out Natalie also did sea kayaking. After having a difficult time booking them through Glacier Bay lodge it was just meant to be with Natalie. Chels and Jenna couldn't stop talking about the kayak trip they'd gone out on for the rest of the day. If you're looking for a great addition to anything you have planned while visiting Glacier Bay I highly recommend you get in contact with Natalie! See more..

    - Absolute MUST do activity!

    Matanuska Glacier Adventures image
We went on a 10 day Alaskan bucket list trip for our 26th anniversary at the beginning of this month (June). We did the Matanuska Glacier Adventures pretty early in our trip and it was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!! Isabel was our tour guide and she was so very sweet and extremely knowledgeable about the glacier and the surrounding area. It was a pretty easy hike/walk even if you are out of shape. I cannot stress enough that you HAVE to do this tour! If we ever go back, we will absolutely be doing this again. 12 out of 10 recommend. ** The last question asked if this was "risky", its not risky but it is unusual and exciting like the question asked,** See more..

Black Ops Valdez - Day Adventures image
I would like to say thank you to Tabatha and her amazing team. They created a customized trip of a lifetime for me. I spent time in the helicopter (bird) and on the sleds (snow machines). This was the best trip I have been on and will absolutely rebook next year. The heli riding was insane and the guide (Steve) was an absolute legend. So knowledgeable, friendly, and humble. I felt so lucky to be part of the team on the best day of riding in my life. The next day it started snowing hard and I went on the snow machine tour. Could not have been better. So much terrain and so many laps. The lead guide (Peter) was awesome and he had an amazing team as well. There were two couples who worked for Black Ops and they shared the stoke. There was Danny and Dani, and Anna and ?. I basically had a photographer (Dani) on my heli team who was so friendly and also went out of her way to make my day memorable. I forgot the names of everybody so I apologize. You all are rock stars. One thing I think everybody should understand is that the weather and logistics call the shots in Valdez. It is best to stay more days and plan ahead. That being said, I absolutely scored and the vibes were epic from the first email to the goodbyes. Tabatha went out of her way to make me feel welcome and moved mountains to accommodate me. Would recommend to anyone who wants to have the best riding experience of their lives. See more..

My sister and I with our families recently did a Northern Lights trip with Steven during a vacation/bucket list trip to Fairbanks/North Pole. It was absolutely the highlight of our trip! We booked the multi-night option, and I'm so glad Steven recommended this. It was cloudy the first couple of nights, and Steven was great about contacting us each morning to let us know the forecast for the rest of our trip. On the third night, the forecast was clear, so we went for it. Steven picked us up at our Air BnB in a van that fit all 9 of us. We drove 30-45 mins outside of Fairbanks to a frozen lake that he was familiar with. As soon as we arrived, the skies lit up...it was unlike anything any of us had ever seen...remarkable! We loved that he is an expert photographer, and he got some fantastic shots of us. He also helped the one photographer in the group set up her camera and tripod to get the best shots. The rest of us used our iphones and actually got some decent pics too, although nowhere near the quality of what Steven did. We'd love to come back in the summertime for backcountry hiking with Steven, as he really knows the area quite well. See more..

I've done a few tours with this company and they've always been really great. I did the half-day glacial hike and felt like I saw so much and it was an amazing. I did a guide in August with a friend and September with my parents and just the changes in the glacier within a month was amazing to see. You can also really tell the guides are well informed and passionate and love being guides here. You really can't go wrong with any tour. As my step-dad said: "I did something I didn't know needed to be on my bucket list!" I also did an ice climbing tour with the guide Tristan. Easily one of my favorite things I've ever done and I want to do more of it. Tristan is very confident and knows how to make you feel comfortable. Great guide! See more..

    - Massive and beautiful glacier

    Matanuska Glacier Adventures image
Our group was 10 people. We've taken a walk near the glacier. All equipped with hiking sticks and ad-on spikes. It really has helped us "to stay in vertical position". Whenever you go over the ice, it's good to have these add-on spikes and the sticks too. I was surprised how big this glacier is. From the far it doesn't look so missive. During our walk I've taken many pictures which I've already shared with my friends. This is great attraction, worth time and money spent. I recommend it! RomanP See more..

Setting up the hunt was easy from the start working with Misty. She sent us recommended gear lists which made things simple if you're bringing your own camping gear. The contract was straight forward and if I had any questions she was always happy to answer questions or put me in touch with one of the other members of the team. Upon arrival to their base camp we were immediately given an update on fly times and what to expect as far as weather. The pilots were incredible and very informative. Arrowhead Outfitters went above and beyond when a piece of equipment got left on the shore. Outstanding group of people and our group cannot wait to do another fly-in hunt through them. See more..

This was a trip of a lifetime! So many things were amazing...awesome crew, food (freshly caught fish and crabs), experiences (hiking, fishing kayaking, glaciers up close, and sooooo much wildlife)! This is a smaller boat guided by crew members that really know the secrets of the area so we were able to get so close to wonderful spots. We would highly recommend this trip! See more..

I can't recommend traveling with Trek Alaska enough! Greg, the owner, helped our group of 4 plan a perfect backcountry trip in Gates of the Arctic and walked through some different options that might work with the activity level, physical fitness, and sights we wanted to see. Our guide Monet was a perfect addition to our group and helped us feel so safe and prepared and make the most of the trip. Trek Alaska's expertise is far-reaching and I will definitely be reaching out again for a Wrangell - St. Elias trip in the future! See more..

    Matanuska Glacier Helicopters image
We took a helicopter tour with Matanuska Glacier Helicopters and had a wonderful time. First, a quick flight up to the glacier where we landed for a fantastic hike with our guide. There was nothing like being way up on the glacier, just us, listening to nothing but the glacier! Hiking around, seeing the features, tasting the glacial waters... it was amazing. Then we were picked up by the copter and treated to a longer flight over the glacier and the surrounding area. Indescribably beautiful. The experience was a once in a lifetime adventure. See more..
