This trip couldn't have been better. From the moment the shuttle collected us, to the moment they dropped us off again, the staff were friendly and keen to share their knowledge of the area and history surrounding it. Thanks to our eagle eyed guide, we were lucky enough to see a wild bear on a beach, before heading further out and finding a pod of very curious porpoises and a number of Humpback whales, including at least one with a calf. This trip exceeded our expectations and made for an incredibly enjoyable and memorable day. I chartered Glacier Wind for a whale watching trip on 7/29/2021 while in port on a Royal Caribbean Serenade cruise because I didn't want to do the ship's excursion. I couldn't have been happier with the experience I had with this family owned business. The communication of the details of where to meet and what to expect were precise and easy to understand. Even though we ended up being the only 2 people who had booked that day, they didn't cancel the cruise even though I expect they didn't make much profit from the booking. Captain Casey was very professional and skilled at both driving the boat and spotting whales from very far away. We saw an otter and many humpbacks and were able to get photos of breaching and fins slapping the surface. He was very knowledgable about the area and the marine life so we learned a lot and really enjoyed the hot chocolate he brought! I highly recommend Glacier Wind Charters for a more intimate and personalized whale watching experience.See more..
Please be advised that all of this area of Alaska has very high tides so getting off any floating object- ship dock etc. might require negotiating a steep ramp. There is a Jitney to take you around the Hoonah tourist area to the shops and the tour assembly sites. To get to the town itself there are taxis for a buck or two to do the mile or so walk. Not much in the town itself and mainly tourist type souvenirs in the area at the port area. The crew on our trip was helpful, but we just got real lucky. There was the pod of Orcas a distance from our relatively small boat that decided that it would be fun to swim under our boat s close as possible to the hull without actually hitting it,. They splashed us as we watched in amazement since we could see them throught the clear water. After that they just hung out in the area-Orca play time? as they slapped their tails on the surface many times. Captain Fred, Maggie and Elena took great care to make sure we had an amazing experience. Captain Fred spends the whole tour sharing his vast knowledge of the Valdez area and Alaska. He ensures that your family will have a great experience, to the point of following a pod of juvenile humpbacks while they hunted and fed. The sight of those whales surfacing in their circle was amazing!!! We were able to see it 4 times! Columbia Glacier is beautiful, and the timeline that Captain Fred adds to the experience helps make the view even more enjoyable. We had a fantastic time on our whale watching excursion. We saw whales bubble net feeding multiple times, sea lions and a very large brown bear! The boat while larger enough has room for only 6 so you are able to enjoy your time without competing for a good view like on some other larger boats I've gone on. Joardan was an excellent captain and guide. We also enjoyed the complementary coffee, snacks and the home made muffins his wife made. If your cruise stops in Icy Strait I highly recommend booking with Hoonah Whale Tours rather than booking one of the larger boats the cruise ship offers in their excursionsSee more..
The crew was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The narrator was interesting, the deck hand and captain knew their stuff, and the server handled refreshments with dispatch. They taught us how to spot the whales, and then helped us identify our pictures.See more..

Natalie was absolutely amazing! Chels and I had a great day fishing with her. She provided all the gear and had Chels on a fish within a few casts. Staying at the lodge at the park and being able to find a local guide in town was the best thing we could have done. Chels was so stoked to find out Natalie also did sea kayaking. After having a difficult time booking them through Glacier Bay lodge it was just meant to be with Natalie. Chels and Jenna couldn't stop talking about the kayak trip they'd gone out on for the rest of the day. This was a privately booked excursion taken while on a week long Alaskan cruise with my wife. Went out on 18 July with three fellow cruise ship passengers and one solo traveler. Had a great time fishing for halibut. I caught one, although not a giant, it made the whole outing totally worth it. Others caught fish as well. Saw some dolphins as a bonus. Captain Billy was AMAZING! He knew right where to take us to see whales. At one point, two whales swam right by the boat on the right side, while another whale was jumping on the left side! It was incredible. We spent all afternoon watching the wales play and feed together. Captain Billy also took us to see bears on the shoreline (watching from the boat). So fun! The boat was clean and had all the accommodations we needed. Captain Billy was able to answer all of our questions and told us stories about the history of the native tribe as well as the island and town. Over all, it was a 5 star experience. Tod and Sarah were both personable and made the experience memorable. Snacks and hot beverages were provided below deck. Our family of three were joined by two other parties, which meant everyone was able to have a great view on deck to see the whales. We saw many whale tails and came in very close proximity to a pod of three whales. We found a very active whale who breached and later showed off his flipper and kept slapping the surface of the water with this tail- I had never seen the latter before. The captain listened to the interests of the group and tried to gear the trip to meet those goals. Tod was able to accommodate our luggage on the Taz since we had checked out of our lodging and were headed to the airport after. This was an afternoon tour and was finalized in time to make our Alaskan Airlines flight in the evening.See more..

We spent 2 wonderful days with Scott on The Pelican and would highly recommend his tours. We did one day of whale watching and one day at the LeConte Glacier. Scott is very experienced with great knowledge of and love for the areas he guides in. He took great care to point out all of the different animals, young birds, and beautiful sights. We saw 50+ whales on our whale watching trip, and even got to see 2 breach! The boat is comfortable and safe, and we appreciated that it had a small bathroom too, as we were out on the water all day.See more..

It sounds cliche, but this was really the highlight of our 10 day trip to Alaska! Gabe is so friendly and knowledgeable and he was willing to customize our 8-hour tour along the way. He mentioned a remote island where oysters are harvested and we asked to go there. No prob! He not only took us there but he shucked oysters for us as we floated in the calm waters of Prince William Sound. We saw otters, seals, bald eagles, porpoises, and puffins but the most incredible part of the day was when Gabe brought us to Surprise Glacier where we watched in amazement as the glacier calved several times. I was a bit nervous as the first few minutes out of the harbor seemed rough (it wasn't), but the rest of the ride was smooth and the 8 hours flew by in Gabe's comfortable boat! Jan took us out on his boat to common whale spots and we saw a total of 7 whales, many were near the shore and very close to us and we sat and watched for a really good amount of time. He also took us to a reefy/rocky area as it was low tide, where sea otters and seal cubs hang out, and we also saw sea lions and many birds. It was a very relaxed and friendly pace and great whale viewing despite pouring rain.See more..

This was a trip of a lifetime! So many things were amazing...awesome crew, food (freshly caught fish and crabs), experiences (hiking, fishing kayaking, glaciers up close, and sooooo much wildlife)! We visited Sitka, Alaska for the first time in March, 2017 to see whales and the stunning scenery. We spent 9 amazing days on a beautiful 84 foot yacht called 'The Northern Song' cruising all around part of the Inside Passage around Sitka. During that time we saw so many whales in the Sitka Sound, estimated number about 80 plus. Constant bubble netting of the humpback whales while we waited for the herring spawn. We witnessed the start of the Sitka Herring Fishery, setting nets and testing the size of the catch. At times, the water around us was sizzling with herring and consequently the whales were extremely active, breaching, lunging and bubble netting. A photographers dream. In the fact the whole cruise was a wonderful experience which we will never forget. The Northern Song yacht is a really beautiful boat and so well furnished inside and very comfortable to sleep on. It is 84 feet long and carries up to 8 passengers plus 3 very helpful crew. The food served on board was delicious and varied. We had a wonderful time on this trip, met some great people and would not hesitate to recommend this experience. If you want to see whales as we did, this is the time and the way to do it.See more..
