WOW! What a Whale of a Time!

I chartered Glacier Wind for a whale watching trip on 7/29/2021 while in port on a Royal Caribbean Serenade cruise because I didn't want to do the ship's excursion. I couldn't have been happier with the experience I had with this family owned business. The communication of the details of where to meet and what to expect were precise and easy to understand. Even though we ended up being the only 2 people who had booked that day, they didn't cancel the cruise even though I expect they didn't make much profit from the booking. Captain Casey was very professional and skilled at both driving the boat and spotting whales from very far away. We saw an otter and many humpbacks and were able to get photos of breaching and fins slapping the surface. He was very knowledgable about the area and the marine life so we learned a lot and really enjoyed the hot chocolate he brought! I highly recommend Glacier Wind Charters for a more intimate and personalized whale watching experience.

    Amazing whale watching experience!
So glad that I choose Glacier Winds Charter out of Hoonah, Alaska. On our cruise ship we stopped at Icy Strait Point. While researching what tours to take, I discovered that the area around Hoonah is known for the Humpback Whales in the summer. These same whales migrate to Maui, Hawaii in the winter. I didn’t want to book with the ship excursions, as there would be so many passengers on their tour boats, and it would be 5 people deep at the railings. When I contacted Teresa after reading the wonderful reviews of Glacier Winds Charter, I felt like I was talking to a friend. She was so courteous and helped me out so much. She picked us up in a convenient location about a 5 minute walk from the complimentary gondola ride from our cruise ship. We then boarded the 13 passenger charter boat, the Apogee. It was a sparkling new custom built comfortable boat built for whale watching. All seats face forward and are on elevated platforms for better viewing. You are surrounded by windows, and when a sighting happens, Captain Casey slows down so everyone can be outside on the deck that completely wraps around the boat. There was plenty of room for everyone to be close to the whales. And we saw so many whales! We had at one time 9 humpback whales bubble feeding on the surface in front of the boat. It was an amazing day, and we were provided hot chocolate and snacks. They also have very good quality binoculars to use during the tour. The ship is not used for fishing, so the interior is just so clean. Even the head (lavatory) was very clean and roomy. This price is comparable to what the cruise ships would charge. It was a great day.

Don’t miss this private whale watch tour!
We chose to book a private whale watch tour for 6 with Captain Shawn instead of the large group excursion offered by our cruise ship. Teresa handled the booking details, and the pick up/drop off procedure at the cruise ship dock seamlessly. We had unobstructed views of the whales- that, along with the Captain’s knowledge of the area and a very comfortable boat, made for an unforgettable experience!
