This trip couldn't have been better. From the moment the shuttle collected us, to the moment they dropped us off again, the staff were friendly and keen to share their knowledge of the area and history surrounding it. Thanks to our eagle eyed guide, we were lucky enough to see a wild bear on a beach, before heading further out and finding a pod of very curious porpoises and a number of Humpback whales, including at least one with a calf. This trip exceeded our expectations and made for an incredibly enjoyable and memorable day. We got great value for money and would highly recommend this as an activity to anyone who is visiting Hoonah/Icy Strait Point. See more..
  2. 5.0 Glacier Wind Charters (490 reviews)
    - WOW! What a Whale of a Time!
Boat Tours • Dolphin & Whale Watching
    Glacier Wind Charters image
I chartered Glacier Wind for a whale watching trip on 7/29/2021 while in port on a Royal Caribbean Serenade cruise because I didn't want to do the ship's excursion. I couldn't have been happier with the experience I had with this family owned business. The communication of the details of where to meet and what to expect were precise and easy to understand. Even though we ended up being the only 2 people who had booked that day, they didn't cancel the cruise even though I expect they didn't make much profit from the booking. Captain Casey was very professional and skilled at both driving the boat and spotting whales from very far away. We saw an otter and many humpbacks and were able to get photos of breaching and fins slapping the surface. He was very knowledgable about the area and the marine life so we learned a lot and really enjoyed the hot chocolate he brought! I highly recommend Glacier Wind Charters for a more intimate and personalized whale watching experience. See more..
  3. 5.0 Icy Strait Point ZipRider (453 reviews)
    - AMAZING thrill ride
Sunday: Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
    Icy Strait Point ZipRider image
This was an AMAZING adventure! The trip in the gondola up the mountain can be a lil nerve wrecking because you realize just how high you have to go up the mountain. But the staff is very well trained and reassuring. Once I was strapped in, and the gate opens, you literally shoot out the gate & move very fast! My head scarf nearly blew away. My heart raced & it was initially very fast, but then toward the middle I got used to it & enjoyed the amazing view. It was awesome and I recommend it for all thrill seekers! See more..

    Icy Strait Whale Adventures image
Please be advised that all of this area of Alaska has very high tides so getting off any floating object- ship dock etc. might require negotiating a steep ramp. There is a Jitney to take you around the Hoonah tourist area to the shops and the tour assembly sites. To get to the town itself there are taxis for a buck or two to do the mile or so walk. Not much in the town itself and mainly tourist type souvenirs in the area at the port area. The crew on our trip was helpful, but we just got real lucky. There was the pod of Orcas a distance from our relatively small boat that decided that it would be fun to swim under our boat s close as possible to the hull without actually hitting it,. They splashed us as we watched in amazement since we could see them throught the clear water. After that they just hung out in the area-Orca play time? as they slapped their tails on the surface many times. We also saw some sea otters lounging about and some other whales off in the distance, . See more..
  5. 5.0 Hoonah Whale Tours (130 reviews)
    - Wonderful Whale Watch Experience!
Boat Tours • Dolphin & Whale Watching • Nature & Wildlife Tours
    Hoonah Whale Tours image
We had a fantastic time on our whale watching excursion. We saw whales bubble net feeding multiple times, sea lions and a very large brown bear! The boat while larger enough has room for only 6 so you are able to enjoy your time without competing for a good view like on some other larger boats I've gone on. Joardan was an excellent captain and guide. We also enjoyed the complementary coffee, snacks and the home made muffins his wife made. If your cruise stops in Icy Strait I highly recommend booking with Hoonah Whale Tours rather than booking one of the larger boats the cruise ship offers in their excursions See more..
  6. 5.0 Hooked Adventures (99 reviews)
    - Just plain old fashion fun fishing!

This was a privately booked excursion taken while on a week long Alaskan cruise with my wife. Went out on 18 July with three fellow cruise ship passengers and one solo traveler. Had a great time fishing for halibut. I caught one, although not a giant, it made the whole outing totally worth it. Others caught fish as well. Saw some dolphins as a bonus. Would recommend! Captain Billy was AMAZING! He knew right where to take us to see whales. At one point, two whales swam right by the boat on the right side, while another whale was jumping on the left side! It was incredible. We spent all afternoon watching the wales play and feed together. Captain Billy also took us to see bears on the shoreline (watching from the boat). So fun! The boat was clean and had all the accommodations we needed. Captain Billy was able to answer all of our questions and told us stories about the history of the native tribe as well as the island and town. Over all, it was a 5 star experience. I would HIGHLY recommend doing this!! See more..

It was much more than just another great fishing trip. The variety of experiences, the natural beauty (lots of whales and bears!), getting to know the incredible Clark family were highlights. The Coho fishing was stellar in several different rivers. The Dolly Varden fishing was something to behold, at times a fish on virtually every cast. Plenty of Halibut for anyone who cares to fill their freezer! It was just a wonderful all around Alaska experience! See more..

    Fairweather Kayaks image
We visited Icy Straight Point on our Celebrity Cruise at the end of July and were looking for something to do away from the cruise ship. This was a great option! Cody and his team were fantastic! We loved the beautiful scenery and all of the history of the Hoonah people we learned. The kayak and gear were all in great condition, but the staff of Fairweather Kayak Tours are what really made the experience incredible. This tour is definitely worth the money and something that will give you the quintessential Alaskan kayak experience. See more..

    Ear Mountain Charters image
We booked a half day halibut excursion after our previous booking called and cancelled on our group of 3. I was able to get on Captain Eric's boat. While the fishing was slow, we caught one halibut and one type of rock fish, we saw soo many humpback whales, stellar sea lions, herring fluttering on the water, the tour was worth every penny even with the lack of fish reeled in. You cannot guarantee to catch fish. Definitely recommend. See more..

  13. 5.0 Wild Bear Safari (18 reviews)
    - The best bear tour!!

    Wild Bear Safari image
We booked last minute with Luke and we were so glad we did. Don't book through the cruise companies, they don't take you far, only up the road to the river with a bus full of people and charge you through the nose for it. Our tour was small and personal. Luke went above and beyond to find us some bears, he even extended the time we had booked to about 6 hours! We went out into the backcountry and off-roads, stopping at various scenic rivers as we went. Luke took us to the stunning Bear Paw Lake for a snack with his own smoked and maple syrup glazed salmon. We did in fact find lots of bear paws! Luke made the entire journey entertaining with funny stories and humour. Due to it being end of season the bears were scarce but right at the end of the tour we spotted one and it was a GREAT way to end the day. Thanks again Luke! -Phoenix and Sam See more..
  14. 5.0 Hoonah ATV Tours (17 reviews)
    - Excellent Experience in the Alaska Wilderness!
    Self-Guided Tours & Rentals
    Hoonah ATV Tours image
During an August 2022 cruise to Alaska, we rented a 4 person ATV for 2.5 hours from Hoonah ATV while docked in Icy Strait Point. We had the best time! The area is beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed our self guided ATV trip. From the cruise dock, we walked to the shuttle stop at the end of the Icy Strait Point compound and took the shuttle to Hoonah. The town is small but quaint. A short walk from the drop off point brought us to Hoonah ATV. Joe was very accommodating, helpful and informative. It was a pleasure to visit with him. The town was smaller than we anticipated and we did some souvenir shopping before taking a taxi back to the cruise port. Joe recommended a taxi service and it was a very convenient way to get back to Icy Strait Point. I will definitely take this tour again if I find myself in Hoonah in the future! Thank you, Joe! This was one of the BEST days ever! I’ve traveled a lot and have seen a lot….I’ve lived in 5 beautiful states…..been deep sea fishing off the coast of Florida, fished the gold metal waters of Colorado, done a 3 day float fishing trip on the snake river in Utah…. BUT where our guide took us was absolutely breathtaking and an experience of a lifetime….a private spot with just me and my fiancé in the middle of a river with salmon running all around us….he captured awesome pictures and videos of us and we catch so many fish….a line gets tangled, or you lose a lure ..no problem he hands you another pole so you can keep on fishing…. Seriously this experience was worth thousands $$$ so the $600 we paid for 4 hrs of fishing in a remote spot surrounded by gorgeous mountains was priceless and worth every penny. Oh and Buddy his dog was awesome too….My little fish retriever ❤️ Thank you Remo for a day we will never forget…we were blessed to have met you…. Fish on my friend See more..

Greg was amazing. He took us on a 3 hour tour and the whole time we felt safe and well informed. We saw Bears, Deer and Eagles and Greg was a great guide also showing us the town of Hoona. We passed several tour groups who had not seen any bears and their vans were filled with people where-as we had lots of space in Greg's van. He was also kind enough to drop us back at the ferry drop terminal afterwards! See more..

The first thing you'll notice are all the beautiful picturess mountains. As you enter the bay, several kinds of whales start showing up and still before your feet hit the ground, you will see eagles everywhere, hundreds of them. Once on land, there are shops to see and plenty of eateries to choose from. We found our guide, Phil Jones and set off on our trek. Our guide found several bears for us. but he also stopped so we could get many other photos and he was very knowledgible about our surroundings. We have hired other guides but none compared to phil. We will never forget our visit to Brown Bear Lodge and our guide phil jones See more..

    - Small cruise ship stop with good scenery but limited and expensive activities
Sunday: Cultural Tours • 4WD, ATV & Off-Road Tours • Historical & Heritage Tours • Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
    Icy Strait Point image
Visited from our cruise ship. Very small place with lovely scenery but limited activities. IMO your best bet is to hike the short nature trails and take the cable car up the mountain for more hiking and scenic views. Would have loved to have done the seated zip line but not at 170 USD for one ride! We had prebooked the bear watch to the river combined with the whale watch and at around 250 USD each it wasn't worth it. We didn't see any bears and found out later that sightings here are rare. The whale watch was OK but we only saw a couple. There is much better whale watching at Juneau and Seward. See more..

My wife and I went to the St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church. The older part of the church where services were formerly conducted was open to visitors. The walls on the inside of the church are covered with beautiful religious icons. So many that it is almost overwhelming. There are paintings, tapestries and some icons crafted in metal. Don't miss St. Michaels. A street next to the church was closed to traffic and the shops along both sides of that street were great. Whether you are looking for apparel, souvenirs or even a pharmacy, they are all there. The local people were all very nice and friendly. We are planning to go back in 2024. See more..

    Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center image
The Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center aims to maintain the culture of the Hoonah tribes and tell their historic story to visitors like us. The growing cultural center is welcoming and personable. The elders will tell you of their story and location amongst the First Nation's tribes of the Pacific North West. You can see examples of their wood carving for totems and canoes and beautiful artwork. This year they have introduced a new selection of merchandise (T-shorts, sweatshirts) which are great quality (we bought a few) and the proceeds go towards the community. All the people here were super friendly and we walked away knowing a lot more about Hoonah and the tribe than we could have learnt from a book. It is free to enter and well worth a visit. See more..
