Small cruise ship stop with good scenery but limited and expensive activities
Visited from our cruise ship. Very small place with lovely scenery but limited activities. IMO your best bet is to hike the short nature trails and take the cable car up the mountain for more hiking and scenic views. Would have loved to have done the seated zip line but not at 170 USD for one ride! We had prebooked the bear watch to the river combined with the whale watch and at around 250 USD each it wasn't worth it. We didn't see any bears and found out later that sightings here are rare. The whale watch was OK but we only saw a couple. There is much better whale watching at Juneau and Seward.

Nice walk to Hoonah! Totem pole carvers!
Icy Strait Point was a nice place to spend a few hours. They have an indoor shopping mall, a salmon cannery museum and a restaurant all under one roof. The gondola and zip line are just outside this building. Everything was close together and easy. After touring Icy Strait Point shops, my friend and I walked 1.5 miles on a nice paved road with sidewalk along the coast to the small town of Hoonah (about 800 year around residents). Once there, we looked at the boats in the harbor, watched a team of 3 totem pole carvers at work (open easy to see area by the road), and went to a very nice gift shop (appears to be the only new building in town). There is not much else to do in Hoonah other than walk around and enjoy nature. We took a shuttle van back to Icy Strait Point for $3 per person, it leaves on the half hour, and is managed by the nice gift shop. Glad we walked one way, but I think the $3 shuttle van is available both directions. One could call the gift shop ahead of time for details. It's called THE SHOPS BY HTA Phone: (907) 321-3393,
