We happened across Jj's and loved it
We got off the ship and grabbed a shuttle into the village of Hoonah. Many people take the tours offered by the cruise company, but my wife and I normally just like to explore. Hoonah was a lot of fun. We happened across Jj Pate's Pain Ointment stand. Jj was full of information and enthusiasm. She explained how the ointment was made from the Devil's Club plant and how the Tlingit Indians have used it for centuries. We bought one small bottle for $5 and she immediately gave us another one free. Here's the funny thing: this organic ointment works! My wife has pain in her knee. She's applied the ointment and the next morning it felt better. It works on cuts, chapped lips, you name it. We ran into a tourist from Michigan who had a pretty nasty gash on his wrist. We directed him to Jj's. I wish we had ordered more. This is not a store. Jj has a table set up in her yard. In the tree above there's a majestic eagle (which makes for a good tourist draw). We bought the pain ointment early in the trip and later I would see it from other makers in gift shops where the price was typically $14-$15. Buying from a Jj is one of those little trip highlights: a good product, something unique, a personal experience and you are helping a small businesswoman. I am sure this product could have a much wider audience. Jj's on the Hoonah's main street (near the school).

Like home cooking
Wanted to see this special ointment they make. Auntie makes it from an old recipe. The place is a little difficult to find- it is across the street from the school. The also have an eagles nest in a tree close by. Very friendly people.
