  1. 4.0 Santa Claus House (1.051 reviews)
    - So-so ok, enjoyable
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Santa Claus House image
You really kind of know what you’re getting when reading about this place ahead of time so it’s hard to be too disappointed. Tourist trap? Over-priced gift store? Tacky Christmas decorations? There doesn’t seem to be tons to do in the Fairbanks area (other than outdoor/nature related of course), so this was a nice little stop not requiring a far out of the way drive. It was enjoyable to see the shop. We didn’t buy much due to prices. Santa wasn’t in, but we were childless and so this was a non-issue. Overall I appreciated the Christmas theme of the city itself just as much or more so than the store. See more..
  2. 4.5 Mendenhall Glacier (755 reviews)
    - Learn how far the glacier face has receded
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Geologic Formations
    Mendenhall Glacier image
Mendenhall Glacier is one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in the U.S., loved for its dazzling blue glacial ice that stretches for 13.6 miles. Start at the Visitor Center to learn about the area's ecosystem and wildlife, then follow the Photo Point Trail up to an overlook for the best views of the glacier, before heading on a hike to the popular Nugget Falls. The glacier is accessible all year round, but is best visited from May to October for the most pleasant weather. Visit the glacier as part of a tour, which can include a whale-watching cruise, a glacier hike, and canoeing at Lake Mendenhall. – Tripadvisor See more..
  3. 4.0 The Ulu Factory (728 reviews)
    - Actual production site!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Ulu Factory image
Interesting to see components being made through a viewing glass. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. City transit doesn't provide front door service but not much of a walk from tourist/downtown area. Their products are sold in gift stores around town for the same cost, just beware the cheaper versions are knock-offs made overseas. Loaded up on Ulu knives for family gifts and they provided flat rate USPS shipping which was a nice convenience. Also, as a side note, these knives can't fly home in your carry-on luggage. Checked baggage ok. See more..

  5. 4.5 National Shrine of St. Therese (637 reviews)
    - Wonderful & Magical
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
National Shrine of St. Therese image
I went with Out the Road Adventures -- super knowledgable about the many different flowers, trees and the history of the shrine. The shrine and its grounds is a wonderful time just to experience peace and beauty. It's a sacred space and I had a lovey time with Lisa Wright, the owner of the tour company. I/f you miss this tour while you are in Juneau, you will have missed a gem that will long be in my memories (while we were there a man even pulled out a guitar as the sun was setting, so I got free wonderful music too!) 6. 4.5 Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (573 reviews)
    - Set timed schedule
Spent More than 3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel image
This is the only way to get to Whittier from land (from Girdwood and parts farther like Anchorage. There is a set schedule; you need to plan to be there according to any plans like a boat trip. We entered the 10:30 am south opening and it was right on schedule. Our wait was only about 15 minutes since we knew schedule and planned accordingly. The train goes first, if it is there, then bigger vehicles and cars. It’s a 2 1/2 mile tunnel that you drive 25 mph through and it’s well lit to take a video and photos. Cost is $13 to include both directions. It was pouring rain when we were there so the mountains had tons of large waterfalls. It rained 4” the day before and another 3”;the day we were in Whittier so the river and waterfalls were in full action mode! See more..
  7. 4.0 Nagley's Store (479 reviews)

    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nagley's Store image
Remember when the groceries lined the walls and not the shelves? This is the place. Everything can be bought here from a icecream cones, a pizza, snowshoes, a 72 inch chain saw, a bearskin and more. Little pricey but its all brought in by van or the railroad. See more..
  8. 4.0 Gold Rush Cemetery (346 reviews)
    - Step back in time in time
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries
    Gold Rush Cemetery image
Stepping back in time, this cemetery is not maintained and therefore it is more interesting. You can read most of the head stones but there is also a board with some of the history of some of the graves in the parking area. We were surprised by the number of woman and children thinking it would be mostly all men. Ages were varied but som very young, if you visit take time to read the board I read it after our visit to the cemetery but it may have been more useful reading it first. It is also the gateway to a wonderful waterfall. Well worth a visit. See more..
  9. 5.0 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race (325 reviews)
    - Great event with beautiful dogs
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race image
We were at the celebratory start in Anchorage (March 4, 2023). Amazing atmosphere, beautiful and eager dogs, great teams and many spectators along 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. It was cold but sunny. As the teams started out, chears and whistling and clapping started all the way out of downtown. We also tried raindeer sausage at one of the vendors. GREAT EVENT not to be missed! The restart was next day out of Willow village. See more..
  10. 4.5 Winner Creek Trail Hand Tram (254 reviews)
    - Excellent there and back trail suitable for most people
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Winner Creek Trail Hand Tram image
Gently undulating, forested there and back trail, 2.5 mile each way to the hand tram. Unfortunately this is currently closed for safety upgrades but there are good river views and a few peaks at the surrounding mountains. Bug spray recommended. See more..
  11. 4.5 Lower Reid Falls (253 reviews)
    - Reid Falls needs a better promoter
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Lower Reid Falls image
My wife and I visited Skagway on May 25, 2022. It was a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures in the mid 60s. We walked from downtown toward Reid Falls and the cemetery over a 2 mile walk in direct sunlight. By the time we reached our destination, we were a little dusty and hot. We entered the cool woods and took the trail to the falls. In a couple of minutes our walk in the sun was forgotten. This waterfall is awesome. It is easily over 100 feet from top to bottom and is a series of falls. You can get right next to it for a great photo. Reid Falls should be on your must do list for Skagway, just below the train ride to White Pass Summit and The Historic Park. The cemetery pales in comparison to Reid Falls. And if you are not energetic enough to walk 5 miles round trip, you can ride a city bus out and back from Downtown Skagway. See more..
  12. 4.0 Whittier Harbor (237 reviews)
    - Worth the visit
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Whittier Harbor image
Whittier is definitely worth the visit. The 2.5 mile tunnel to the town only opens every half hour and costs a $13 toll (credit cards accepted), so it's important to plan your visit carefully. You can walk around the whole town in about 2 hours. Very quiet and pretty. There are restaurants around the harbor and coffee shops where you can warm up. The people in the town are very friendly and open to questions about living in such a small town. See more..

  15. 4.5 BLM Arctic Circle Monument Sign (117 reviews)
    - It's a sign off the highway - but it's the ARTIC CIRCLE!!!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
BLM Arctic Circle Monument Sign image
If you are planning a trip on the Dalton Highway, then you must stop. It is just a sign off the main road, but it's the entrance to the Artic Circle!! We visited in January 2022 and the Dalton was covered in snow and ice. We had a 4x4 with studded tires, so the drive wasn't too terrifying (but it was definitely scary). We saw 1 bird during our visit, and that was it. It was -25 degrees below zero, so I am sure most of the furry creatures were hunkered down trying to stay warm. See more..

  26. 4.5 Alaska Indian Arts in Haines (15 reviews)
    - first nations art that you can get into
Saturday: Points of Interest & Landmarks
Alaska Indian Arts in Haines image
Artists working live, curator providing information on artifacts left out to touch and feel, i dont usually find much interest in "native art" as it has been over-commercialized, made in china and so on, but this was genuine - a working creative studio, unapologetically messy, and hands on touch/feel/ talk/ learn something new. see something that actually moves you. yep - i bought stuff. and got some great photos too. i highly recommend this visit. and its free if you dont get caught up in the great art and simply have to buy something. which by the way is authentic and at a great price. 27. 4.0 Herring Cove (12 reviews)
    - Herring Cove Was A Hit With Us!
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Herring Cove image
Someone in town told us to go to Herring Cove right at low tide to possibly see bear activity. We were on our own in town, and had our own car so we tried going twice. The second time we sat quietly with another couple for about 30 minutes and we saw a Mama bear and two Cubs. The Mama bear caught a salmon and quickly ran back into the tall grass with the Cubs. Wildlife does not always cooperate, but we respect their space and loved seeing a glimpse of their life. See more..
  28. 5.0 Thompson Pass (10 reviews)
    - Beautiful place
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lookouts • Scenic Walking Areas
    Thompson Pass image
The only way from Valdez to Anchorage goes through the Thompson Pass. We took an hour brake for short hiking there. It was a great idea! An hour went like second, but we were able to see another beautiful part of Alaska. A lot of flowers, a lot of snow makes this place magical. Wherever you look, the views are gorgeous. I've taken many pictures and record many minutes of the video of that great land. If you go through this Pass, stop the car , go out and enjoy! There is a big parking lot on the top of the Pass. I strongly recommend it. RomanP See more..
  29. 5.0 Chief Son-I-Hat's Whalehouse (9 reviews)
    - The Best Totem Poles on Prince of Wales Island
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Chief Son-I-Hat's Whalehouse image
In late September, we drove from Craig to Kasaan. Look for the Kasaan Cafe (which was closed for the season). The trail begins at the parking lot. A half-mile stroll on a level rock trail takes you to the Whalehouse and the group of poles. In my opinion, these Haida poles are the best on Prince of Wales Island. Gazing on these poles deep in the shore forest is a spectacular reward for the effort of the hike in. The 20-mile crushed-rock road from the highway to Kasaan is a bit rough. See more..
  30. 4.0 Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center (9 reviews)
    - A must see in Hoonah
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center image
The Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center aims to maintain the culture of the Hoonah tribes and tell their historic story to visitors like us. The growing cultural center is welcoming and personable. The elders will tell you of their story and location amongst the First Nation's tribes of the Pacific North West. You can see examples of their wood carving for totems and canoes and beautiful artwork. This year they have introduced a new selection of merchandise (T-shorts, sweatshirts) which are great quality (we bought a few) and the proceeds go towards the community. All the people here were super friendly and we walked away knowing a lot more about Hoonah and the tribe than we could have learnt from a book. It is free to enter and well worth a visit. See more..

Tucked away on Prince of Wales Island is the tiny hamlet of Hydaburg, a community filled with Haida people, their stories, their culture and their totem poles. The park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features several poles which have been either preserved or recreated and brought to Hydaburg from other communities. There is strong evidence of an active and productive group of Haida people who are proud of their heritage and eager to tell their stories.
