Time your visit to coincide with tribal program

So privileged to visit Chief Shakes house on a day when the building was open. We were entertained and educated with song, dance, and storytelling. Stunning building that should be a source of pride to the local Tlingit people.

    Travel back in time
Chief shake's Island is a walk over a wooden bridge a short walk from the center of town. On the island is a Tribal House and totems standing. One can also see the totems that are waiting to be repaired. Go experience the history of the Tlinglit people here in Wrangell.

    So run down
This island could be amazing. The totem poles have been put in little shelters. They no longer stand on the property. The house is locked right now. The one totem pole standing is in disarray. I really wish the locals would take care of this island because of the history behind it.
