National Tsunami Warning Center, Alaska, United States

4.5 (9 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #12 in Palmer Points of Interest & Landmarks

Interesting. Informative. Free.

I revisited the National Tsunami Warning Center for the 1st time since I was in junior high. My husband, 5 year old daughter and 70+ year old mother went with me. Awesome to see the technology advancements of the last 20 years. I am NOT in the industry but my daughter was curious about earthquakes so we took her to the experts. Recommend stopping by to learn about what they do and see it all in action.

    Tours provided on Fridays
The National Tsunami Warning Center is located in Palmer, Ak. They open the doors to the public every Friday afternoon. They provide a wonderful briefing of how tsunamis are generated, and what action one should take. The staff is very friendly and happy to inform the public about their mission. After the briefing, we were able to see the operations center where they track earthquakes all over the world. Very interesting stuff! Good for all ages as the tours are catered to the group, whether it be younger kids, college age, or adults just curious to see how the center operates.

    Tsunami warning around the world.
One of the most interesting tours we have ever taken. What an amazing state of the art place. They only have 5 minutes to send out a Tsunami warning after they detect an earthquake anywhere on the planet! That is a lot of weight on a Scientist's shoulders. The equipment, the staff is over the top, thank goodness! Do not miss this one.
