    Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center image
Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold as well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays. Start at the Visitor Center to learn about the area's ecosystem and wildlife, then follow the Photo Point Trail up to an overlook for the best views of the glacier, before heading on a hike to the popular Nugget Falls. It was a long ride out to Holgate glacier but worth the trip. We were dropped off for kayaking and it was a fabulous day. The views are spectacular. We saw harbor seals in the vicinity along with all the birds. The glacier thunders and eventually calved while we were there. Nice place to get out and stretch. Surprise glacier is next door and also beautiful. See more..

    Sawyer Glacier image
There are two parts to this glacier and we saw both. We took the 8-hour boat ride out of Juneau and it was very well done by Allen Marine Tours. A good boat tour will include slowing when near the small icebergs floating by, being close to a waterfall or two and even possible whale or mountain goat sightings. Be sure to wear layered clothing as it can be cold in the open even if it is not when you leave Juneau. See more..

  12. 4.5 Salmon Glacier (127 reviews)
    - A breathtaking sight at the end of a demanding drive
    Geologic Formations
    Salmon Glacier image
It's an hour-long drive over a potholed and dusty road with spectacular views for everyone but the white-knuckled driver striving to stay on the road while avoiding loose rocks and downed trees. The glacier itself is awesome . . . but there's not a lot going on, so after fifteen minutes and posing for snaps and slapping mosquitoes, it's time to head back. Worth doing, particularly on a sunny day. See more..
