Bodenburg Butte, Alaska, United States

4.5 (139 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Palmer Hiking Trails • Geologic Formations

Great views which certainly worth the hike

This is a relatively easy hike which includes climbing 505 stairs if you use a more civilized West loop. 360 Mat-Su valley views definitely worth the effort. If you have a binocular, you can even see the Knik glacier. There is a standard 5-dollar fee for parking at the National Park area.

    Short Hike, Great Views!
Despite the rainy, moody weather, my family and I decided to try this out, and we're so glad we did! Note that there is a small fee to park at the trailhead. We took the Western Route, which is a bit muddy right now, so make sure to wear hiking boots with good traction. The first third of the trail was well-maintained and wide. The rest of the trail consisted primarily of stairs. Since conditions were a bit slippery, we were thankful for the ropes to grab onto as we trekked the stairs. This short, relatively easy hike led to superior views! Sheer majesty doesn't even begin to describe the absolute beauty of the summit views, which included mountains, greenery, and the Kinnick Glacier. If you do one hike in the Valley, do this one!

    Amazing views
I have read several review listing this as an “easy” hike. If you are like me and attempt the south trail, it is anything but easy. Unless you are in very good shape, please do not use this trail and go towards the west side instead. Parking was $4 on the honor system, which is a bargain for the views you begin to see almost immediately on the trail. Looking at Pioneer Peak and the valley all at once was incredible. Highly recommended to all levels and ages (just pick the right trail)!
