    - What a gem
    History Museums
    Talkeetna Historical Society Museum image
We had seen the little museum as we walked around the town and decided it would be a good thing to do the next day which was forecast to be rainy. We are so glad we did. The woman at the desk was friendly and inviting and explained there were several films to see in the various parts of the museum. There are also several small cabins around town that are part of the museum which were actual living quarters of early residents. Besides all the locally collected artifacts in the museum which include everything from housewares to sleds to climbing equipment, there were two videos. One was on the building of the Alaska Railway and the other on climbing Denali. Both were well done and informative. If you want to get a feel for an Alaskan settlement and the lure and exploration of this wilderness area, this little gem of a museum should appeal. See more..

  11. 4.0 Tongass Historical Museum (157 reviews)
    - Well organized exhibits in a building overlooking Ketchikan Creek.
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM History Museums
    Tongass Historical Museum image
The Tongass Historical Museum at 629 Dock Street, is just a 10 minute walk from where the cruise ships dock The Museum’s location, alongside and overlooking Ketchikan Creek, where salmon begin their journey upstream to spawn and die, is meant to convey that we are part of a circle of life much larger than any of us. There’s a subtle genius to the way colored panels are used to organize the museum’s exhibits. Salmon (of course!)-colored interpretive signs describe each exhibit’s central theme. Panels with white text on a green background present photos, examples, and explanations of each theme. Finally, lighter green-gray panels present supportive quotations to ground each exhibit in the experience of individuals (often local). It’s like a color-coded outline to each exhibit. Admission is $6/18+, $5/senior, 17 and below are free. See more..

Soldotna Historical Society & Museum image
Soldotna Historical Museum, located on Centennial Park Rd, features a wildlife museum and historic log village. Among the log buildings is the last territorial school built in 1958, where students studied by the light of gas lanterns, still hanging in the school. Soldotna's founding settlers arrived in 1947. The "habitable dwellings" which entitles two of these first homesteaders to 160 acres from what is now mid-town Soldotna are part of the village. How the latter-day pioneers lived is revealed in a collection of homestead artifacts and photos in the former Chamber of Commerce log tourist center. Damon Hall, a large building constructed for the Alaska Centennial, features an outstanding display of wildlife mounts with a background mural of these species' natural habitat. The museum is open May 15-Sept 15 of each year. There is free admission. The museum is operated by the Soldotna Historical Society & Museum, Inc.; a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the early history. See more..

    Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center image
We really enjoyed our trip to the Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center. The four clan houses built inside were beautiful and fascinating to see, and we were fortunate enough to arrive in time to hear some of the stories that had been passed down through the generations. There was a lot of road construction on the road leading to the center, which will likely last for another year or two. But if possible, it is worth the trip. See more..

We spent an afternoon leisurely looking over the authentic artifacts, displays and documents. We loved the history of the gold rush days. This roadhouse has an amazing story. The docent was friendly and gave us information on other places to visit while in Fairbanks specifically the large animal research center (my personal favorite). We did a self-guided walking tour of the outside implements used for the construction of the Alaska Highway. The roadhouse has overcome great odds to be a museum and is worth taking the time to see if you are in Delta Junction. See more..

We got to visit the museum in April between seasons, glad the curator was nice enough to make time for us, and glad we went to see the site. It was great to get a look into this era of Alaska. To say that Anaktuvuk Pass is off the beaten path would be an understatement. It is located in Gates of the Arctic National Park which was our primary reason for taking this day trip. Anaktuvuk Pass is a small inland Eskimo village which is not accessible by road. You have to hike in or fly in. We were lucky enough to have one of the locals tour us around the village during our visit. Mickey was awesome and extremely knowledgeable about the area, history and residents - he did grow up there and had great stories. As part of our tour he took us to this museum. What an amazing surprise to find a museum of this quality in such a remote place. The displays and information housed here was fabulous. And it was even more special because so many of the folks featured in the exhibits were relatives of our guide. We were blown away by this place. If you happen to visit this unique, remote place - don't miss this museum. See more..
