Katirvik Cultural Center, Alaska, United States

5.0 (5 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #5 in Nome History Museums

Excellent cultural references!

This Center is housed along with the Mclain Museum, plus the library in the Foster Building - they are not at the addresses listed! Much to see and learn about Yup'ik and Inupiaq ways of living for the last many millennia. Hospitality by the employees was very nice. Commend!

Learning about the region's traditional culture
I didn't get a chance to get out of Nome or to talk to locals, and so this little museum was extremely interesting and educational, and it feels good in its emphasis on continuity of traditions. They have a lot of nice objects, many of them recent, like incredibly crafted parkas, and drawers with some things you can handle. There are small screens where you can read excerpts from interviews, that are really well selected to tell about life there and how it's changed. One that stood out to me told about gathering "greens," which are various plants that are eaten, and how they used to be preserved and used.

Great addition to the Nome community
The Katirvik Cultural Center is a much needed addition to Nome, sharing cultural information and artifacts from the Indigenous peoples of the region alongside some of the artifacts of the Gold Rush era. It's a lovely spot to visit and the interactive exhibits are quite informative.
