Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum, Alaska, United States

4.5 (32 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Nome History Museums

Excellent Museum.

There are so many things in this museum that it is impossible to see all in one visit. Many relics of the early gold rush days along with artifacts of the early natives.

    Well Put Together
Great place to visit with minor charge to get in. There is a free day to but otherwise, it's only $4/person. Charming well-put together museum. Shares building space with the library where there is Internet and lovely environment.

    Nome's Must See
I love a good museum/visitor center, and this small museum is one of the best I've been in. While the exhibits are tight, they weave the story of Nome so effortlessly that you are just left wanting more (even though it really does a great job of portraying 100+ years of history). Of course, the exhibits start with the sport of dog mushing. While Nome is the finish of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Nome's history with dog mushing goes much further back. There is a whole tribute to Leonhard Seppala, with his dog Fritz in the center of the space. Iditarod is also well represented. Then what follows is the gold rush era of Nome and how it was once the bustling hub. There's also some Wyatt Earp thrown in for good measure. Some of the exhibts are hands on with video, audio, much of the turn of the century items and furs are touchable. Overall a fun stop. Give yourself a couple of hours, especially if there is a special exhibit in the gallery (we were there for the Iditarod finish so we got to meet Alaskan Artists Jon and Jona Van Zyle). Well worth the price of admission, and their small (very small) gift shop has some wonderful items as well. I can't wait to visit again (hopefully soon)!
