    Historic Sites
    Captain William Moore Cabin image
I visited the Moore Cabin / Homestead Museum during my walking tour of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway on the Skagway port day of my Alaska cruise in June. There was no guided tour or park ranger presentation. So, my self-tour of the museum was pretty short, but I still appreciated learning about the history of the place from the exhibits. Interesting to learn that Skagway was founded by Captain William Moore, who set up residence and business there instead of going on the gold rush. The NPS has diligently restored and maintained the old cabin and the residence into a historical museum complex. It is one of the farther units from the Visitor Center of the Historical Park, but still an easy walk. See more..

I was born and raised in Nome and these remain on of the coolest landmarks in the close vicinity (+/-4 miles from town) and you get a two-fer with Anvil Rock a ten minute walk away along the ridge. These DEW line antennas (Distant Early Warning) remain a valuable memorial to the cold war with the Soviet Union just, 150 miles away, and have served generations as a beneficial landmark for wayward winter travelers during harsh conditions. From this hilltop you'll also get the best view to be had of Nome and the entire coast from Cape Nome to Cape Rodney -and many of the historical mining sites in between. You can not pass this by. The Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center aims to maintain the culture of the Hoonah tribes and tell their historic story to visitors like us. The growing cultural center is welcoming and personable. The elders will tell you of their story and location amongst the First Nation's tribes of the Pacific North West. You can see examples of their wood carving for totems and canoes and beautiful artwork. This year they have introduced a new selection of merchandise (T-shorts, sweatshirts) which are great quality (we bought a few) and the proceeds go towards the community. All the people here were super friendly and we walked away knowing a lot more about Hoonah and the tribe than we could have learnt from a book. It is free to enter and well worth a visit. See more..
