Captain William Moore Cabin, Alaska, United States

Part of Skagway History

I visited the Moore Cabin / Homestead Museum during my walking tour of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway on the Skagway port day of my Alaska cruise in June. There was no guided tour or park ranger presentation. So, my self-tour of the museum was pretty short, but I still appreciated learning about the history of the place from the exhibits. Interesting to learn that Skagway was founded by Captain William Moore, who set up residence and business there instead of going on the gold rush. The NPS has diligently restored and maintained the old cabin and the residence into a historical museum complex. It is one of the farther units from the Visitor Center of the Historical Park, but still an easy walk.

Oldest building in Skagway, next to Moore House
The Moore cabin is a small typical log cabin but there is nothing inside. Next to it is the newer Moore House which is furnished in period art and Victorian furniture. The famous piano where the Alaska Song was written is also found here. It is open most of the day, free, run by your National Park Service. Occasionally there are children's programs given on the lawn in front - ask at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park Visitor Center on 2nd and Broadway. Moore House is on 5th and Spring. Don't miss the little antique shop next door with authentic gold rush items and replica gold nugget necklace.

Go To Nat'l Park Visitors Center First(!!)
We didn't know and stopped here first before going to the National Park Service Visitors Center, so we did not get the tour. There is an information sign in front and signs next to the displays in the Moore House, but after reading the reviews by others here, I can see that we missed out on a lot of the experience. Go to the NPS Visitors Center first and sign up for the tour!! I think this would have been a "Very Good-Excellent" review if we had.
