White Alice Site, Alaska, United States

4.5 (26 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Nome Historic Sites

cold war history, or James Bond movie set...take your pick

I was born and raised in Nome and these remain on of the coolest landmarks in the close vicinity (+/-4 miles from town) and you get a two-fer with Anvil Rock a ten minute walk away along the ridge. These DEW line antennas (Distant Early Warning) remain a valuable memorial to the cold war with the Soviet Union just, 150 miles away, and have served generations as a beneficial landmark for wayward winter travelers during harsh conditions. From this hilltop you'll also get the best view to be had of Nome and the entire coast from Cape Nome to Cape Rodney -and many of the historical mining sites in between. You can not pass this by.

The area around Nome is NOT boring
On Richard Beneville's tour of Nome, he will show you how beautiful this area is. Anvil Mountain has remnants of Cold War surveillance, now dismantled, the remnants tower over the landscape as a reminder of how crazy our world is/can be. With any luck, you'll get to see the inland area, loaded with rolling hills, valleys, rivers and gorgeous mirror lakes. It won't be hard to see wildlife, and the fields of irises are spectacular.
