Called in here a for a bite and beers after doing the white pass train ride. Had to wait a short while for a table as the place was very busy. What a fun place. Out waitress was excellent, friendly and efficient. Food was good, beer was tasty and the reindeer fart cocktails went down well. 8. 3.5 Fairbanks Ice Museum (358 reviews)
    - Beautiful art
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
    Fairbanks Ice Museum image
The museum is located in downtown Fairbanks and parking is difficult, even more so for us driving a 25 foot RV. We dropped in to see if there was a time opening. We were allowed to join in on the tour that just started. After watching a film you were invited backstage to see many small ice sculptures. The backstage is kept at 20 degrees to keep the ice from melting. And they have parkas available to use so we were comfortable. We even rode the sled down a small ice slide. Afterwards, we watched a short demonstration in ice carving—and we were amazed at the beautiful work the artists can do. Wow! When you can’t be in Fairbanks to see the making of the BIG sculptures in the winter, this summer tour is beautiful. But for the $15 entrance fee, you would expect a little more. See more..

This small museum contains the collections assembled during the late 1800's of the various Alaskan tribes. The glass cased displays contain the larger items from native life. The real treasure can be found in the drawers below the display cases. Here you see, up close, the items from daily life. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. The most interesting fact is the silverware was created by reshaping Russian coins. There is no local silver in Alaska. The Russians initially couldn't figure out how their currency was disappearing. - Beautiful building and great gift shop
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
Sealaska Heritage - Walter Soboleff Building image
In May 2015, Sealaska Heritage Institute opened the Walter Soboleff Building—our Box of Knowledge. This cultural and research center is dedicated to the sharing and study of the ancient Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. It is owned and operated by Sealaska Heritage Institute, a Native American nonprofit conceived by clan leaders, traditional scholars, and elders and founded in 1980. Its mission is to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. The institute has been on the forefront of documenting and revitalizing endangered languages and cultural traditions and pioneering programs that promote cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding. The facility is a special place for Southeast Alaskan Natives, and a place where everyone--Native and non-Native alike--can feel welcome and learn something about their heritage. The Soboleff building is like a traditional bentwood box in that it holds our at.oowu--our treasures. In addition to housing our administrative offices, the building contains our climate-controlled archives, our classrooms, the Sealaska Store and our public exhibit, which we call out True Southeast experience. A work of art in its own right, the building contains space for art demonstrations and exhibits, as well as a traditional clan house clad in hand-adzed cedar. It features large-scale work by some of the best artists of our time. Each tribe is represented in monumental art, which includes the installation “Greatest Echo,” huge formline panels on the exterior by the Haida master artist Robert Davidson; an enormous painted-and-carved house front in the entry by Tsimshian master artist David A. Boxley; and—in the clan house inside the building--the largest glass house screen in the world by Tlingit master artist Preston Singletary. The exterior awnings feature formline designs by Steve Brown, and the interior is clad in cedar that was hand adzed by the Tlingit master artist Wayne Price. See more..

Soldotna Historical Society & Museum image
Soldotna Historical Museum, located on Centennial Park Rd, features a wildlife museum and historic log village. Among the log buildings is the last territorial school built in 1958, where students studied by the light of gas lanterns, still hanging in the school. Soldotna's founding settlers arrived in 1947. The "habitable dwellings" which entitles two of these first homesteaders to 160 acres from what is now mid-town Soldotna are part of the village. How the latter-day pioneers lived is revealed in a collection of homestead artifacts and photos in the former Chamber of Commerce log tourist center. Damon Hall, a large building constructed for the Alaska Centennial, features an outstanding display of wildlife mounts with a background mural of these species' natural habitat. The museum is open May 15-Sept 15 of each year. There is free admission. We really enjoyed our trip to the Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center. The four clan houses built inside were beautiful and fascinating to see, and we were fortunate enough to arrive in time to hear some of the stories that had been passed down through the generations. There was a lot of road construction on the road leading to the center, which will likely last for another year or two. But if possible, it is worth the trip. See more..

    Ilanka cultural center image
This very small "museum"/gift store/cultural center offers a unique look into the four native peoples who populated this area before discovery by various Europeans. There are some artifacts including the last carved out cedar canoe that exists along with other explanatory placards and artifacts. The most interesting was to talk to the docent who was a member of Supiak group of native persons. She was able to discuss the effects of the earthquake in 1964 on the way of life and how the area looked totally different before that as well as to talk about efforts to save the Eyak language now that the last native speaker died. Truly interesting and worth a visit. See more..
