This is an EXCELLENT Museum!

We really enjoyed our time at this museum! They have a wonderful video giving the fascinating history of this old Norwegian settlement in the Territory of Alaska and we were amazed to read the story and see the exhibit of the 126.5 pound WORLD RECORD King Salmon that was caught in a fish wheel nearby in 1939...

    Don't Miss the Photo Books!
In 1942, the Coast Guard photographed every resident of Petersburg. Flipping through the books, you get a very different picture of "Little Norway" because half of the people are Phillipino, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish..... it was a diverse place. If you have any questions, the curator is super helpful.

    Quaint museum, worth a visit
Visited the Clausen Museum for about an hour, while relaxing in Petersburg before catching a noon flight. $5 was worth it; had nice balance of historic, Native, informational (esp about fishing), and natural/environmental displays. Especially enjoyed the dug-out canoe. Yes, it is a small museum in a small town, but if you are in Petersburg for any length of time, is worth a visit. Easy walking distance from downtown (was 3 short blocks from our hotel), and it also has a nice gift shop. As others mentioned, the 20 minute video about founding of Petersburg was worth watching as well. Gives insight into an interesting slice of Alaskan history.
