Amazing cultural experience

Gordon Greenwald, Master Carver, shared the history of the Tlingit Native American tribe, his background, and how he came to be a master carver of totem poles. Take 30 minutes to visit this site, watch a totem pole being carved, learn about this tribe and a bit of Alaskan history. It's an experience that won't be forgotten.

    Local Teens put on Show
Hoonah requires the local teens to share their culture with visitors through storytelling and dance as part of the their graduation requirements. They shared their tribal clothing, history of the Tlingit people, a typical tribal dance and story.

    Cultural experience, learn Tlinglet lore
I enjoyed the 1.5 hour theatre show that the local Native peoples put on for our small group because I learned about the Raven and The Eagle in Tlinglet lore, which is quite fun and interesting. The native Hoonah Tlinglet teenage performers wore traditional costumes as they were singing and dancing in an interactive tribal celebration. Yes, interactive means at the end they encourage audience members to come up and join them in a dance. It is fun, we participated. Learning about the Raven and the Eagle gave me a better understanding of the striking red and black Native Tlinglet 'stencil look' artwork I was always admiring. If you have time from your other excursions at this port, go see the show as it does support the local kids and community. No photos are allowed at the show.
