Informative and leisurely trail

I came to know of the Pullen Creek Stream Walk in Skagway while waiting to get on the White Pass Summit Train ride at the train station near the ship docking area. Since I had quite some time before boarding the train, I decided to take a walk on the trail. My visit was the first week of June, much before the salmon started swimming. So, I did not see any salmon in the creek waters. There are frequent informative and colorful plaques along the walk providing local wildlife information. The walk follows Pullen Creek (sometimes called Dewey Creek) and is quite peaceful. There are a few road crossings along which require some caution. I certainly recommend this walk as it is very flat and can be leisurely.

    Pink Salmon Run Up-close
The short, easy Pullen Creek Stream Walk is located in the Pullen Creek Shoreline Park at the corner of Broadway and Congress Way just north of the cruise ship docks and is easy to miss if one is not looking for it. The walk follows Pullen Creek (sometimes called Dewey Creek) and loops around a small pond in the center of the park for a total of about 0.3 miles (0.5k). The creek is quite narrow and very shallow which provides an easy opportunity to get an up-close look at Pink Salmon when the run, typically from late July through September. Arriving in very early August, it was apparent that we had arrived early in the run. While there were quite a few Pink Salmon in the creek and pond, they were not as dense as we had seen at other places at the peak of the run and there were few if any dead salmon in the area. We watched as a local worked to catch some future meals out of the pond and enjoyed spending some time watching the salmon fight their way up the strong current of the shallow creek.

A short walk to see phenomenal salmon run
If not for the bed smell (apparently coming from dead fish) we almost missed this easy short (0.3 mi/0.5 km) trail near the ship cruise docks and a block away from the railway station. While we had seen salmon run in other places (Haines, Whitehorse) fish in Pullen Creek were easier to watch. They were everywhere along the small creek and pond, swimming against the stream, spawning on the gravel bed, and loads of dead ones were washed aside. It was a spectacular sight - and free. The gravel trail had a few overlooks and information panels about the kinds of salmon in the area and their life cycles, plants, etc.
