Savage Alpine Trail, Alaska, United States

Great Hike In Denali

Hiked the trail starting from the Mountain Vista trailhead. It was a great hike. The hike is 100% uphill and then 100% downhill. The Savage River end of the trail is steep. The top of the hike was windy and chilly on the day we hiked. We had a picnic at the top. The day was overcast, so we did not see Denali from the top. The vista was beautiful nonetheless!

    Nice hike
A nice moderate trail. Much easier to start at the Mountain Vista bus stop and hike to the Savage River area. The parking was easy there and we caught the shuttle back after adding on the Savage River Loop trail at the end to complete a 6 mile hike. Not too steep going this direction and we saw no other hikers until we nearly reached the end starting our day at about 8:30am. Poles were helpful but not required as the walk down was a little steep.

    Great short hike!
We were fortunate to have a beautiful clear day with fabulous views of Mt. Denali from the trail. There were some wildflowers along the trail and the trail followed a pretty stream for a while. We started at the Mountain Vista trailhead and decided to hike halfway up to near the top of the trail, sat down on some rocks beside the trail with our snacks to enjoy the great view of Mt. Denali, and then retraced our steps back down to our car. We could have continued to the other end of the trail and picked up the bus back to our car, but the Rangers had said the other end of the trail was much steeper and would be harder going downhill. We are retirees with some knee issues, and did use our hiking poles a bit on the way down! Note there is little shade on the trail, so definitely take a good supply of water, especially if the weather is warm and sunny. There was plenty of parking near the Mountain Vista trailhead (although it took a few minutes to find the correct trailhead as there are a couple of other shorter hikes that start from the same area). There were a fair number of other people on the trail, all very courteous, and we heard several languages spoken--many international visitors in Alaska.
