Deer Mountain Trail, Alaska, United States

4.5 (110 reviews) Spent Ranking #10 in Ketchikan Hiking Trails

Check out my pictures; it was a great day!

I hiked this trail on June 24, 2013. We arrived in Ketchikan on a cruise ship and I wanted something active to do. I asked in the Tourist Information Center and they suggested this hike. I am more than happy that I went. I took a taxi from the pier to the beginning of the trail. This only cost me $8.00 and was worth it since I did not waste the time walking through the town just to get the trail head. It took me about two hours to hike to the second overlook and more than an hour to hike down and back to the pier . (I am in average shape, so if you are fit you will be able to do this in a shorter time.) The final part of the trail had snow on it, so I did not venture to the summit. This was one of the best things that I did on my Alaskan cruise. It was a clear day with plenty of sunshine in Ketchikan. The views were awesome.

Worth a visit, but make sure you can hike to the second overlook two miles in.
I got off the ship early and went to the visitor's center at the dock. The lady there had trails maps available. She also offered a personal locator beacon and called me a cab. I highly recommend taking a cab, $12 give or take with tip. Due to my personal time constraints I was only able to hike to the first overlook one mile in. This view wasn't that great. While I enjoyed my later walk to check out the Rainbird Trail, I do wish I would have continued on this trail to the second overlook. It took me 45 minutes to hike one mile in and likely around 35-40 minutes to hike back out. I didn't take many breaks so I would estimate two hours to get to the second overlook and four hours total to hike up and back down. Cell reception is great at the trailhead so you can contact the cab company to come and pick you back up. My original review had a link to a pdf document that contains maps of area hikes. I guess this was rejected due to the link. A simple internet search should allow one to find the link.
