Diamond Creek Trail, Alaska, United States

4.5 (13 reviews) Spent Ranking #25 in Homer Hiking Trails

Wonderful

We loved this hike. We took the longer route which starts close to the main road, and meanders on flat ground for a ways before descending to the beach. You will want to have rubber boots, the mud is "fun." On the stoney beach we saw a few bald eagles, and a whale carcass. The walk back out is moderately steep but nothing extreme. Once we ascended to the flatter terrain, we walked on the gravel road back to our car. That road is passable with a sedan, a few large potholes to navigate

Highlight of Homer - Amazing views from the beach - slippery as hell - after rain the day before - so worth it!
Hiked here the day after a lot of drizzle the previous afternoon. I personally didn't find it tricky. My Hubby & 2 kids (6 & 12yr old) struggled a bit though - really slippery/slushy & some pretty thin parts of the trail near some steep drop offs. The end result was sooooo worth it though. Make sure you time it with low tide so the kids can play in the tide pools. The views are spectacular. If your into rockhounding its a delight. Orcas had been seen off here only 2 days earlier - we saw several seals instead. We were staying with some locals, one who has hiked just about everywhere in Alaska. This is a hike she does with her own 6 & 4yr old grand children and the place she thinks you get the best views of the mountains along cook inlet. Was a main highlight for me of our trip to Homer - and there's nothing I really dont like about Homer.

    Rough but worth it
If you want to get away from the crowds on the Spit but still enjoy the beach, this is how you do it. The road in is a clue as to what you're in for, it's steep, unpaved, and subject to heaving. The hike itself is lovely, it mostly parallels Diamond Creek as it descends a ravine but the trail is quite steep in places, and can be very slippery after a rain. Be sure you have the right shoes. When you get to the bottom, it's up to you, there's miles of beach, right where Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet meet. Walk the beach, go tidepooling, explore the creek, and then get ready for a brief but tough climb back up that hill. For a real adventure, you can leave your car at Bishop's Beach in town and get a ride to the trailhead, it's about seven miles of lovely beachto get back to town, be sure you are aware of the tides or you could get stuck for a few hours.
