Mount Margaret Summit, Alaska, United States

5.0 (6 reviews) Spent Ranking #20 in Denali National Park and Preserve Hiking Trails

Beautiful, yet challenging, hike

This is a great way to get out and see the park and put some distance between you and the crowds. Drive down to Savage Creek and park you car (it's the farthest you can drive you own vehicle). My buddy and I hiked north along Savage creek for a mile or so, and then cut west, straight up the mountain slope. It was a bit of a slog up the slope, but lots of fun. Once you crest the top, you're good to go. We didn't really follow a trail, but it's hard to get lost out there as long as you keep your wits about you. Great day hike. Great way to get away from the tourists.

    Tough Hike, Great Rewards!
Now, just to be clear - you're not going to be climbing Denali or anything with the route, so no need to worry that it's a giant mountain-climbing adventure. This is possible for anyone! Mount Margaret has multiple ways to get to the top and there are no official trails. The easiest and most commonly used path is about 2 miles up the road from the Savage Check Station, where you'll find a game trail that winds up along the west side of the mountain. If you follow this all the way up, you'll go through some scree slopes and varying terrain, but will find your way up to the top fairly easily. I have tried what is referred to as "The Cowboy Way", which is to climb up from the west side of the Savage River Loop Trail. It gets very steep and you'll have to navigate serious scree that slips out from under you. We got chased down by an angry Dahl Sheep, which was difficult to do down the steep edge. Definitely recommend the first route over the second!

    We saw dall sheep!!!
Trails are hard to find in the park, but we bushwacked some in the way up and maybe found a social trail after about 20 minutes. We were looking for dall sheep (as our bus driver told us they are frequently in the area). After over an hour, we were nearing the summit and getting discouraged as we did not see any. We persisted on the way up and headed along a ridge toward Savage River and finally found 6 dall sheep!!! We got very close to them and took some amazing pictures. We could not find the social trail to get back down and did some crazy bushwacking. VERY fun!
