Ketchikan Rainbird Trail, Alaska, United States

4.5 (76 reviews) Spent Ranking #15 in Ketchikan Hiking Trails

Beautiful Trail

If you like to hike and want to get away from the Cruise ship tourists I highly recommend hiking the Rainbird Trail. It is a lush Rainforest path; easy to traverse with some beautiful views. We opted to take a cab from our dock to the trailhead at the college and then hike back. Our cab driver gave us great advice which I will share for free. Don't take the first set of stairs down but hike on to the second staircase. That will take you down to the street and then walk back toward town. You can stop at the lovely Ketchikan Library and enjoy free Wi Fi and more beautiful views. It is a steep but downhill walk back to the cruise docks.

Close to town with great views of Ketchikan and beyond
If you start at the end closest to downtown (pass the Ketchikan Library and continue walking NW along Schoenbar Rd.) you could just go up a set of stairs, hike a short way and see great views of Ketchikan, the ocean, and the mountains beyond. From the stairs to a view point could take you only ten minutes. If you continue hiking all the way to the other end of the trail, which comes out next to University of Alaska Southeast, you should be wearing good walking shoes as the trail goes up and down over rocks and roots. This could take you 45 minutes one way. You are close to town, but you feel like you are away from it all, as you experience hiking in a temperate rainforest. If it is rainy, the big rocks on parts of the trail can be slippery, so again, wear good walking shoes. If you have limited time in town, and you want to see the forest and views of Ketchikan, I recommend the Rainbird Trail!
