Wuzhen, a 1300-year-old water town on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, is a national 5A scenic area and one of China's top ten historical & cultural towns. Located on the Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain in northern Zhejiang Province, it is at the center of the golden triangle consisting of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Wuzhen can be easily accessed through a number of expressways and national highways. In 2001, Wuzhen was named as a candidate for UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List. At the end of 2006, it was included in the revised List of China's Candidates for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. In 2009, Wuzhen was named as the first PATA eco-tourism destination in Mainland China. The ancient Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows through the town, which is divided by waterways into four areas, Dongzha, Xizha, Nanzha, and Beizha. We have visited this scenic spot three times in April this year and found that it was more impressive at night time. Although we could not see the moon at the time of our visits but the reflection of pavilions on the calm lake was photogenic and enjoyable. It is very beautiful in spring; but nothing if you have seen tulips in Netherlands already. It can be very very very busy! And I am not joking. Definitely do not visit during public holidays and weekend if you have choice. I would not even drive near there during those days. If you pay enough attention on how he has designed and planned his residence, we can know that he is a highly ambitious politician on powers pursued ... how to live with a luxury and tasteful life. Entrance to this museum is free and it is very informative. Explains the history and changes to tea in China over the centuries and why certain methods are favoured today. Has lots of cool and well preserved artifacts without overdoing it as many other museums tend to do. We had difficulties at first entering because we needed to prove our health codes and travel history but after that it was a very pleasant visit. Drove here from Shanghai, which might be a better option than what others went through. That said, we were on a road trip heading further west. Entrance payment has been abolished. I wouldn't call this place overly commercial. There are a lot of artists and craftsmen selling their wares in an exceedingly laid back vibe. The place is atmospheric and tranquil. At this stage it is a good sign to see Chinese tourists in a scenic spot and they are of a fairly high quality. Those who are even trying to compare to West Lake in Hangzhou are not being at all fair on this place and though yes it does have nominal similarities, that's it. This is about 120 years old, the brainchild of a local Qing lord who wanted to build a playground out of an ancient bluestone quarry. If you ignore the age of the place and just enjoy its natural beauty and elegance then you can't help but love it. I think my photos speak better than my prose can allow, so I will just say that it may or may not be worth doing the cave boat ride as it's not dirt cheap by Chinese standards and only lasts about 15 minutes, but the price of entry into the attraction is more than worth it. Take time to explore every inch of the grounds which go all the way to the caves and all the way up the hill. A great way to spend the morning, especially on a sunny day like we had! See more..

It was not the best season to visit Quyuanfenghe in April as the lotus would only bloom in summer months from July to September each year.
