This place is definitely worth a visit, especially for those staying in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou as it is a nice place for a long weekend getaway. While it may be a bit of a drive to get there (over 4 hours from Shanghai), it is worth the drive if you enjoy water activities, island hopping, and picturesque sceneries. Those who are even trying to compare to West Lake in Hangzhou are not being at all fair on this place and though yes it does have nominal similarities, that's it. This is about 120 years old, the brainchild of a local Qing lord who wanted to build a playground out of an ancient bluestone quarry. If you ignore the age of the place and just enjoy its natural beauty and elegance then you can't help but love it. I think my photos speak better than my prose can allow, so I will just say that it may or may not be worth doing the cave boat ride as it's not dirt cheap by Chinese standards and only lasts about 15 minutes, but the price of entry into the attraction is more than worth it. Take time to explore every inch of the grounds which go all the way to the caves and all the way up the hill. A great way to spend the morning, especially on a sunny day like we had!See more..

I use to drive bicycle to NanBei lake from Haining city. Lake is located between the hills near to coast. It is laid-back area with less tourist. You can just walk around the lake, visit small island in the middle or rent a boat. Local people selling souvenirs and fruits. If you cannot speak basic Chinese you will have problem to order a meal in restaurants as they do not have English menu or menu with pictures. From the hills above is nice view of lake and from eastern hill you can see Hangzhou bay. I have never met a foreigner there, it is really not a known attraction. First we boarded a 10 Seater raft boat into the cavern. The structures in the cave are colorfully lit with 3D effects in some areas. A very unique cavern experience. After that we walked up towards the glass bottom bridge, another intriguing sensation. We enjoyed taking many photographs looking thru the glass pathway. This little stretch of the Shenglong River (really, little more than a brook) makes for a pleasant ramble. I enjoyed it more than Baishui Waterfall anyway. This gorge seems more biodiverse, with a range of different trees and flowers on display. The walking trails are also more extensive and varied, allowing for a short or an extended hike. The Purple Snowy Waterfall made for some attractive snapshots, but really the whole area is pleasant. The cultural relics that once dotted the area have been lost, however. The various pavilions were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and their replacements lack authenticity, to say the least. Still, the Chinese in our party enjoyed the opportunity to get river snails at a rustic tea-house alongside the river. This is a minor but engaging enough stop on a drive through the area.See more..
